Hinckley Notches 2nd True Value Mod Win at Canaan

Les Hinckley, Windsor Locks, CT; scored his second win of the season Sunday afternoon, June 3, at Canaan Fair Speedway, Canaan, NH; capturing the “Canaan 100” for modified race cars, his seventh career win with the True Value Modified Racing Series. The second generation driver captured the same event last spring at the Granite State oval. “I’ve always loved this place, we came here year’s ago with the pro stock, won an open comp show, love to come back,” Hinckley said, after being chased to the finish by point leader Kirk Alexander, Swanzey, NH. Hinckley, who started the race 15th out of 28 racers, took the lead from Louie Mechalides, Tygnsboro, MA; at lap 50, and was never headed. Mechalides pursued Hinckley until lap 90 when he yielded the second spot to Alexander. Alexander gave chase to Hinckley but was unable to get close enough to contest for the win.

The 100 lap race, delayed one day by severe thunderstorms and torrential downpours, saw Claremont, NH; driver Sean Bodreau and Westbrook, ME driver Tony Ricci bring the field to green with 26 cars giving chase. Ricci jumped into the early lead with the first of eight caution periods slowing things down on lap 3 for a Donnie Lashua, Canaan, NH; slide over the first turn embankment. With no harm to either the car or driver, Lashua rejoined the field for the restart. The yellow flag was displayed again on lap 9 for Norwich, CT; driver Tom Abele. Jr, as he went off the second turn and returned.

Newcomer Chris Pasteryak, Lisbon, CT; quickly moved into second spot and stalked race leader Ricci for several laps.

At lap 25, the top five consisted of Ricci, Pasteryak, Todd Patnode, Swanzey, NH; Mechalides, and Bodreau. The same five drivers had the same five spots at lap 40 when Gary Casella, Saugus, MA; brought out the third caution on the afternoon. Lots of great racing took place 6th through 8th at the 40 lap mark with Bryan Shumway, Belchertown, MA; holding down sixth spot, Peter Jarvis, Ascutney, VT; seventh, and Rob Goodenough, Swanzey, eighth. On the lap 40 restart, Mechalides moved into second and four laps later, on lap 44, Luke Royea, New Hampton, NH; spun bringing out the fourth caution flag. When the race restarted, lots of jockeying went on with Hinckley jumping into the lead on lap 50 followed by Mechalides, Patnode, Goodenough, and Jimmy Kuhn, W.Bridgewater, MA.

Hinckley would set a torrid pace over the second half of the race often leaving five or more car lengths between him and Mechalides.

The race was slowed four more times on laps 52, 69, 79, and 87. The most serious incident was on lap 87 when the engine stopped running on the Goodenough # 06 while running third after a strong showing causing a four car accident on the front stretch. The incident caused the red flag to be displayed for excessive water from damage suffered by the Kuhn # 72.

When the race restarted, Hinckley, Alexander, Mechalides, D. Jarvis, Ascutney, and Andy Seuss, Hampstead, NH; made up the top five at lap 90 and that’s the way they would complete lap 100.

The preliminary heat races were run prior to the rain storms on Saturday with Bodreau, Ricci, and Douville winning the 12 lap events. The 15 lap consolation race was captured by Ed Dachenhausen, Danbury, CT.
