Who has driven from Riverhead to Pocono Raceway before? I've heard varying amounts of time it takes to get back and forth. I'm thinking about driving out from Pocono after Happy Hour for the Mod Tour race but obviously I need to drive back after the mod race.

Anyone having a good guestimate would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Wheels it takes us about 3-3 1/2 hours to get from Medford to Mountain. Which is further on I-80 than Pocono. I don't know how far off of 80 Pocono is though. Hope you make the trip though, would be nice to see you!

I've found in the past, it takes 2,to 2 1/2 hours to get to Pocono. Then set the cruise control at 3 mph for about another hour to get near parking for the track.

Assuming you are talking about Saturday, once you make it to I-80, you'll be fine.
There are two ways out, one of which is the well known exit to I-80 on PA Rt 115 North. The other is to take a left out of the track, follow Rt 115 South to US 209, and then take that to PA rt 33 back to I-80. Coming thru NJ, get off I-80 at exit 64 (Route 17 South, then quick left exit to US rt 46, follow that around thru to the lower level entrance about 1/4 mile from the GW Bridge, which will help get you by the usual 45 min to 1 hour back-up on I-80. I did this route from 1978 through 1992 and it always worked well for me to help avoid the traffic. It may sound a bit longer, but I always left after and got home before people who used the standard way.
After that, commit this to memory, and burn these instructions, because if too many people find out about them, this way won't be any good anymore,
LOL!

For going back, get to I-80 exit 284 before 6am, and it shouldn't take to o long to get back in. Just go in a comfortable car, and get a good nap before the race.

BTW, the track is about 4 miles south of Exit 284 (Rte 115)

yeah, I bought some fancy GPS earlier this year which has helped on the direction part. Problem is I don't know a good estimated time. I have a few guys from the team that might make the road trip with me but I want to give them a fair time - because they don't want to spend any more time traveling as it is.... W.J. - how long does it usually take you? And yeah - I'd only be coming out Saturday....

Canceled Hotel reservations in East Stroudsburg due to the tour on Saturday at the head.
But we left the hotel at 6:30 Am and were parked in Pocono at 8:00Am a normal 40 Min Ride. Prior to Dale Ernhardt Sr`s death it was much worse.
If you leave let's say Medford at 5:00, it should get you there by 8:30-9:00 with one short stop. THE LATER YOU GET THERE, THE WORSE THE TRAFFIC.
BTW I`m driving the BIG GREEN BUS to Pocono this Sunday, as per TEDDY.

Watch the traffic. I took me 7 plus hours from Shirley to Mountain due to an over turned truck. We can always say 2 1/2/ hours but there is always traffic in the city too. lol

Traffic thru the city at that hour is NIL. At the same time and route it took 3-1/2 Hours to get to Dover VIA Jittney.

2 1/2 - 3 hours sounds do-able. Do I have anyone that's done it in 2-2 1/2 hours?

Thanks to everyone!

NO WAY. Min 3 Hrs to the track ( 20Min west of the 380 Merge) Than add at least 1 Hr to the track in Traffic if your early.

It takes me approximately 2 hours to get through the toll curtain (without any Jams, hehe) to Riverhead....................
The ride(do it twice a week) to the big track in Pocono takes me in the opposite direction about 35 to 40 minutes...............:help:
Add'em together and there you have the true flight time............................:D

How times have changed! I remember a trip in 1973 (pre Cup) with the Joel McElearney crew. They had their car at Pocono 3/4 for a mod race and their driver, Danny McNamara, had a ride at Islip that night. Travel time? 1 hour and 55 minutes including a ten minute stop on I-80 for a (you guessed it!) speeding ticket from N.J.'s finest!

Actually, stay on US 209, it goes right back to Rt 80 directly, if you use this way out.

The LIE closing, I think, is only Westbound side, and I'm pretty sure it does NOT happen on weekends, the Hamptonites would be furious, LOL! Call 1-800-ROADWORK for more info.

In 1983, the Charlie Jarzombek fan club bus was 1 hour late to the Commack Park and Ride. It was supposed to be there at 7am and got there at 8 am. The bus driver made it from exit 52 to Pocono Raceway in 2 hr 22 mins. That bus was not governed like HJ's buses are. He was hauling the mail.

Wheels, the race is usually over by 9:30, so you can probably make it back to Pocono long before 2 am.

I made it from Moriches to the Richard Petty exit (was 43) in pocono , in 2 hrs. and 15 mins. with no traffic if you leave at 4 am...........

That exit has been renumbered to 284 (mile marker), just so no one gets confused.
