WALL SCOTT MOTOR COACH NIGHT MAIDEN WINS TO BOHN, CAMPBELL
Okerson takes Sportsman 50; Pein, Jennings also win
by Walter Elliott

WALL TWP., N.J. -- Danny Bohn, of Freehold, and Malcolm Campbell, Jr., of Eatontown, won their first respective Wall Township Speedway modified and Legends Cars features on Scott Motor Coach Sales Night Saturday. Class champion Chas Okerson, of Freehold, won the 50-lap sportsman main. Value Towing Factory Stock driver Gary Pein, of South Amboy, and former street stock champ Dave Jennings, of Howell, also won their mains.

Bohn won his career first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series modified main by getting the drop on polesitter Bill Weichert after a lap 11 restart. The Weathervane Service/Kevin's Auto Repair No. 77b Troyer-Chevrolet driver went on to a .276 sec. victory margin on the No. 55 RTE-Chevy of Steve Reed. Former INEX Bandolero driver Bohn became the latest of three generations to win a WTS modified main. Brother Mike, who won earlier this year, father Eddie and grandfather Parker have 58 combined feature victories dating back to 1951. Okerson, Jason Treat, Kevin Flockhart and Bohn teammate/last week's feature winner Mike Carpenter rounded out the top half of 12 finishers. Weichert, who split the 10-lap heats with Dave Cranmer, salvaged seventh place.

Campbell ousted poleman Whitey Kowalczyk at the start and endured 10 restarts to win his first career INEX Legends Cars feature. The Brice NAPA Kickin' Motorsports No. 15 600 Racing- Yamaha driver went on to a 1.736 sec. victory margin on Dennis "D.J." Macri when WTS officials, citing time constraints, halted the scheduled 25-lap contest at 21 laps. Bruce Roslin, Roger Coss and Steve Stull completed the top five of 20 finishers. Campbell, Roslin and Ron Poley won the eight-lap heats.

Sportsman king Okerson paid tribute to his late mentor, Ray Gastelu, of Jackson, after winning the Sportsman 50. The McCurdy Well Drilling/John Blewett Auto Salvage No. 99 Scott-Kar/Chevy titlist ousted fast-timer Kevin Eyres and put a 3.854 sec. victory margin on Charlie Kremer III. Eyres, Dave Green and Matt Przemielewski rounded out the top half of 10 finishers. Seven-time defending titlist Okerson, in victory lane, said that the Sportsman 50 will always be the Gastelu Memorial to him. WTS management and the Gastelu family named the extra- length race in Ray's honor 2001-05. Sportsman/pro stock/ modern stock master Gastelu died of a pitside heart attack in July 2001. Current points leader Eyres topped the class charts with a 13. 868 sec., 87.593 mph qualifying run on the banked paved one-third-mile oval.

2005 Street Stock champ Dave Jennings made his class comeback complete by edging Elliott Wohl by .630 sec in their 25-lap feature. Jennings used his No. 51 Steve's G.S. Tire & Equipment 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo to pressure and pass WTS first-year full-timer Nick Gargiulo on lap 14. Wohl demoted former New Egypt regular Gargiulo to third on lap 23 but ran out of time to catch Jennings. Jennings said his No. 51 now has nine feature victories over the last four seasons. He had parked his Chevy last year to drive Bobby Richards' sportsman until last month. Gargiulo and Ed Mccarthy split the heats.

Pein won his second factory stock feature of the season but has had his triumphs overshadowed by no fault of his own. The No. 38 H&H Auto Wrecking/ Mike's Auto Center Tire Service Chevy Malibu master had inherited his first win last month after post-race inspectors disqualified the first finisher. Pein came from 11th starting place to take the lead on lap eight after leader Danny Collamer and Gary Weber collided. He then held off charging current points leader Vern McLaughlin by .029 sec. on the 25th and last lap.

While Pein was taking the checkered flag, fifth place Felix Ciattarelli struck McLaughlin's car hard along the backstretch, sending the latter's car into an uncontrolled slide towards the fourth turn. Medics and track workers spent 20 minutes extricating McLaughlin, of Whitehouse Station, before sending him to a local hospital for observation. Ciattarelli was disqualified for post-race rough riding with possible further penalties to be announced. WTS officials also disqualified Ron Lane on lap seven for disregarding their orders. Tom Fratesi was also taken to the hospital before he could start his heat. Weber and Bill Connolly took their qualifiers.

Racing activity turns to the Wall Calabreeze Pools/Van Wickle NAPA Sunday Series on the one-fifth-mile paved oval noon today. Racing stars of the future are to display their abilities in Legends, Bandoleros and other scaled or kart-based racing vehicles.

The Sports Car Club of America Formula Drift national tour makes their third annual stop noon Saturday. The Circuit City-presented national championship may be decided on this penultimate tour round.

Several WTS racers may bring their cars to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park's Cruise Night, 5 p.m. Sept. 11. The drivers are to have their cars on display and may take them onto the famous quarter-mile strip for unofficial match races and tire burnout contests.

All six WTS divisions are to return for Fan Appreciation Night Sept. 15. Fans can meet their favorite drivers and cars on the big oval prior to racing. The Wall Calabreeze Pools/Van Wickle NAPA Sunday Series resumes noon Sept. 16.
