There was a piece on the other night on Speed Channel about the "new hybrid"... pros and cons... that decision is yours ultimately.
From what I saw and understood of the segment... the Hans restricts movement forwards and back, where the Hybrid does this and also seems to be offering restricted movement (protection) from side impacts. Seems at R'head we have a lot more side impacts between hitting walls, spinning out, etc.. than just recieving the hit from behind, almost never a real head-on hit.
For my husband, after I get a chance to speak with the chief-stewards to make sure they will allow the hybrid... I will seriously consider purchasing it for him. It is also supposed to be more affordable as they are made with different choices of compounds/materials. Now.. that I don't understand about and do need to find out about. Any info on that would be terrific.

Brian,
Isn't the R-3 what is being referred to as the hybrid? It is the R-3 as you call it that they did the segment on... I thought it was the same piece of equipment.

Nascar sanctioning???... if the proof is out there that it will give you a better chance to survive impacts of various angles do you really care? Buy it, use it and be safer racing. I would be willing to bet it will get serious consideration when they see how much more protection it provides to the driver. Then again, we are referrring to NASCAR... where the almighty dollar has turned racing into a joke. The more money into the pocket... well, you got the drift!

If you have a HANS and a full containment seat, you don't need the hybrid. JMO.

NASCAR does intensive tesat at the R & D Center. My drivers use the HANS.

But wich one allows a driver to turn his or her head to look at the opposite side of the track to judge the intersection. i know the hans dosn't allow that much movement and in any fig-8 car up front of pack or rear of pack you need to time the "X".

HANS has a new strap that allows turning of your head from side to side. Oval Speed can get it for ya.
