Eight A-Main winners among 79 entrants helped
reopen the Garden State Quarter Midget Racing Club's 'Little Wall'
track on Wall Township Speedway grounds March 29-30.
Brianna Page, of Brick, and Brandon Grosso, of Belle Meade, each
won two divisional A-Mains before the Fifth Annual Garden State
Classic concluded Sunday afternoon.
Page and Grosso shared Little Wall victory lane with Trevor Rizzo,
of Northfield; Joey Bailey, of Helmetta; Sammy Piazza, of
Lawrenceville; Louis Keratis, of Toms River; Jeremy Doll, of West
Creek; and Sara Locascio, of Carmel, N.Y.
The 'Garden State Eight' are the first feature winners since Turkey
Derby XXXIV was held at the adjacent 'Big Wall' Nov. 24-25. The banked
paved one-third mile oval, while available for leasing, is silent for
the first time since its Memorial Day 1950 opening.
While WTS Managing Partners decided to keep 'Big Wall' closed March 14,
they have allowed the GSQMRC to hold its 17th season on the 48.46-acre
property. The Nicol family, who built and owned the Wall Stadium grounds
until 2002, built the one-20th-mile Little Wall paved oval and related
infrastructure in 1992. Both WTS officials and GSQMRC President Wayne
Wilson, of Old Bridge, said that the club has independent insurance.
Quarter midgets are traditional sprint or midget car appearing open
wheeled cars powered by industrial engines of no more than 5 horsepower.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and State Police Racing Control
Unit allows drivers seven to 16 years old to compete with the proper
safety equipment. Drivers race in classes based on experience, body
weight, age and horsepower.
The GSQMRC, sanctioned by Quarter Midgets of America, has seen
several of its drivers advance to 'Big Wall' and beyond. At least
two of its drivers from among five states - Bailey and John Blewett
IV, of Howell, are second and fourth generation racers.
The club hosted a QMA Eastern Grands June 25- July 1, 2006 and is
set for the 2008 Regional 2 Grands May 24-25.
Page headed off fast timer Zach Haspel and Locasico to win the
Heavy 160 A-Main. She also defended her GSC Heavy Honda race crown
against Haspel and Miranda Carr. The 13-year-old also set a new
Heavy Honda class record 7.596 sec. fast time on the one-20th
mile Saturday.
Grosso's double started in the Junior Honda division, setting a
class track record 7.976 sec. fast time and holding off Nick
Peroni and Joey Jarowicz in the A-Main. He won the Jr. Stock
feature over fasttimer Jacob Neike and P.J. Spernal.
Bailey won the Sr. Honda A-Main against record fasttimer
Doll and Derek Krum. Bailey is the son of American Three
Quarter Midget Racing Association and American Micro Stock
Racing ***'n. feature winner and 'Big Wall' racer Russ Bailey.
Doll came away with an 8.347-sec. record.
Doll rebounded to set fast time and win the Light B feature
over Piazza and Joe Ryan Osborn. Locascio took the Jr. Half
Midget main against Carr and Brett Casey.
Keratis captured the Light 160 A-Main ahead of Samantha Evans
and Navesink-Middletown's Glenn Slocum.
Piazza set fast time and won the Light Mod main over Brandon
Bock and Doll.
Rizzo also set fast time and won the Jr. Novice A-Main against
Johnny Thissen and David McCrone. Blewett, son of the late 2006
