The annual “Test & Tune” session took to the track last Friday at Spencer Speedway. On hand were the four main divisions; NASCAR Modifieds (6), SST Modifieds (12), Street Stocks (6) and Super Sixes (5)., making for a total of 29 cars that turned out for practice.

“I hope all of the teams were able to obtain the information they needed from their sessions,” stated promoter John White . “We are all looking towards the season opener this Friday, (May 16).”

One SST Modified driver made some hard contact with the front stretch wall during the practice. Andy Jankowiak, who earlier had turned in the third best SST Modified time of the night, hit the wall exiting the fourth turn. In the process his right rear tire and hub assembly was torn off his number 57. The lose tire ended up against the pit road gate in turn one, rolling the entire length of the front straight.

Minor spins were recorded by the SST Modifieds of Jeff Hamman and newcomer Dave Sedlack. SST Modified driver, Ron Wildey also took a short excursion through the fourth turn grass.

Five separate sessions were given to each division before dusk fell on the track. Mike Leaty, the 2006 and 2007 NASCAR Modified track champion at Spencer, used a late session in the NASCAR Modifieds to turn his best times in his new look US Army Modified. Leaty turned in three consecutive laps during the fourth set of 19.94, 19.97 and his fastest of the night 19.82 seconds.

In the SST Modifieds Kevin Timmerman scored the top speed. During the third session he turned in a lap of 21.13 seconds (85.187 mph). Hamman turned in second fast time with a lap, just 7 hundredths slower, 21.20 seconds. Of the 12 SST Modifieds on hand all were within one second of each other.

Top time in the Street Stocks went to Thomas Carino Jr. with a 24.47 second (73.559 mph) lap during the third Street Stock session.

To no surprise Kris Hillegeer, the 2006 division champion, recorded the fast time in the Super Six division turning in a 28.40 second lap during his third session.

The 54th annual oval track auto racing session at Spencer Speedway kicks off this Friday, May 16, when it will be Whelen All American Racing night. On hand will be the first of eight NASCAR Modified specials, when the “Land-Rockets of NASCAR” run a 50-lap season opener. The weekly divisions will also be on hand. The SST Modifieds take to the track for their first 35-lap main of the year. The Street Stocks will run a 20-lap feature and the action will be topped off by the Super Sixes. Race time begins at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . It is Upstate NY’s “ NASCAR Place to Race” each and every Friday throughout the summer.
