Buddy Lazier and Mario Dominguez and learnerd how close .395 mph can be in making or missing the 92nd Indianapolis 500 field Sunday night. Lazier, whose 217.939 mph four lap average was bumped out by Marty Roth 12:05 p.m. got back into the field with 219.015 mph at 5:47 p.m. local time. He and car owner Ron Hemelgran, who both won the 1996 500 and reunited this year, saw a two minute, 44.3720 sec. mark over the four laps on the historic 2.5-mile Brickyard.

Lazier and the Hemelgarn-Johnson No. 91 Dallara-Honda bumped out 500 rookie Mario Dominguez. Dominguez had put Roger Yasukawa out of the field with 218.620 mph average at 5:34 p.m. With less than three minutes left to qualify, Dominguez made a final attempt to bump out Roth. Although his first lap was on track to make the field, the Visit Mexico City Pacific Coast Motorsports No. 96 pilot spun into the first turn wall for a fiery wreck. Dominguez, whose walk away from his car was seen live by milllions of ESPN2 customers and on 90 large screen televisions throughout Mexico City, left while an IRL official closed qualify at 6 p.m. with a starter's pistol.

The field has now been set with drivers from seven states and 10 countries. There are 11 rookies - the largest delegation since 1997 - and four former 500 winners.

Lazier, who lingered in his cockpit a moment to collect his emotions, received $50,000 from Firestone as last qualifier. Dominguez, with Yasukawa and his CURB/Agajanian No. 98, are unofficially first and second alternates. They and/or their cars could only answer May 25's 1:15 p.m. green flag should one or two other qualified drivers and/or their cars suffer misfortune.

Dominguez and Yasukawa are not the only ones on the outside looking in. Phil Giebler was released from Methodist Hospital Sunday after spinning his American Dream Motorsports No. 88 into the second turn wall 4 p.m. Saturday. He will be recuperating from a pair of bruised lungs while the team regroups with Jacques Lazier for the Bombardier Learjet 500k at Texas Motor Speedway June 7.

Max Papis was primed for a last-hour qualifying attempt after his crew rebuilt the No. 44 from an accident Saturday. A slipped clutch, however, left 'Mad Max' stalled on pit lane. Roth filled the field at 5:51 p.m. Saturday but his 215.506 mph average allowed A.J. Foyt IV to bump him out by 12:17 p.m. Sunday. Roth then bumped Lazier at 1:30 p.m.
