STEVENS DOUBLES IN THE STREET STOCKS, RUDOLPH TOPS NASCAR WEEKLY MOD 75 LAPPER

A full night of NASCAR racing greeted the racing fans last Friday at Spencer Speedway, on Kings Auto Service & Sales Night. Topping off the night was the running of the first extra distance feature for the NASCAR Weekly Modifieds. Outsider, Erik Rudolph, came in from Ransomville , NY , and showed the way to the checkers after 75 laps.

“My grandfather called the shots tonight,” referring to his famous grandparent and racer, Jim Rudolph. When asked if he planned on coming back to Spencer this year, Erik stated, “We plan on being here for the Whelen Modified Tour race (July 12) and possibly another extra distance modified race.“

The Street Stock division ran two 20-lap features. The first was the rain delayed event from last week, June 13. Don Stevens used a low shot exiting the fourth turn to pass Dan Scott for the lead and the win. His victory made him the fifth different Street Stock driver to find the Spencer victory lane this year. Scott, Willie Strusz, Mitchell Wright and Phil Alhart Jr. rounded out the top five finishers.

Stevens Referred to his son Hunter, “he lost the bicycle race earlier tonight so I told him I would win the feature for him.”

Stevens also came back and dominated the second 20-lap feature, making him the first repeat winner on the year. All he could say then is, “I guess we are having just a good night.”

The Super Six feature was won by Kris Hillegeer, his fifth class win in 2008.

Twenty-two NASCAR Weekly Modifieds answered the call for the start of the 75-lapper. The start was somewhat rough as Don Pringle caught a wheel and spun down the front straight, calling for another original start.

Once underway, Ryan Beeman took the lead from the pole starting spot. He was being chased by Andy Jankowiak and Jeff Polaski. On lap four both Daryl Lewis Jr. and Buck Catalano spun high off the speedway between turns three and four. Catalano’s car was too badly damaged to continue and recorded a last place finish. As for points leader Lewis he had to report pit-side and in the process lost eight laps as the race continued.

Beeman continued to lead. On lap 12 the yellow flew when Daryl Lewis Sr. spun the Don Pratt Memorial car in the fourth turn. Another yellow flew before the race could be fully resumed when Steve Malin went around in the second turn.

On lap 19, Jody London lost the handle and spun in the second turn. When the green flag flew again it was Kevin Timmerman taking the lead from Beeman. Following him towards the front was Erik Rudolph. A yellow interrupted the race for the lead, when Mike Florio made contact with the fourth turn wall. On the restart, Rudolph pulled to the outside of Timmerman. Lap 26 saw Rudolph complete his pass for the lead.

The green would remain out until lap 38, halfway, when Lewis Jr. again looped around between turns three and four. In the meantime Rudolph stretched out his lead over Timmerman, Beeman and Jeff Hamman.

Following two more yellows for minor spins, Rudolph stretched out his lead by some twenty car lengths. A late race yellow, lap 73, saw Beeman, who dropped out of the top five on lap 69, spin down the back stretch. During this yellow, multi-time feature winner, Tony Hanbury, slowed to a stop in the fourth turn.

The race was completed with a green-white-checkers. Rudolph took his first ever NASCAR Weekly Modified feature win at Spencer. He was followed across the finish line by Timmerman, Hamman, Chris Finocchario and Terry Cheetham.

Don Stevens was able to win both Street Stock features. He took the lead in the first one on lap 11 of 20. Over the final nine laps he was being dogged closely by Dan Scott’s Ford. In the second feature he passed Mitchell Wright down the back stretch on lap six to take the lead. In this race he pulled away winning over Phil Alhart Jr. by some thirty car lengths. Both features went green-to-checkers without any cautions.

The Super Six feature saw Kris Hillegeer pass Keith Butler for the lead on lap eight. From that point on Hillegeer pulled way for the victory. In victory lane the officials stopped both Hillegeer and Butler , who had won the week before but was not able to have a victory lane due to the weather.

Butler commented, “Last week was a good time. I am just glad we were able to get the race in as the storm was coming in fast.”

Hillegeer stated,” It is great to win on my sponsor’s night” , referring to Kings Auto Service & Sales. As for his racing a Weekly Modified car last week, he stated,” I had a couple of experiences last week. Those cars can scare you some. I have to thank the Terry Cheetham team for giving me a chance.”

SPENCER SPATTER: It seems that weather was again a factor as reports of heavy rains just twenty minutes west of the speedway helped to speed the show along….Kings Auto Service and Sales not only sponsored the “Kid’s Bicycle Races” for the night, they also held a drawing to give away six new bicycles to lucky kids in the audience. Class winners in the Kid’s Bicycle races were as follows: Ages 2-3: Trevor Catalano, Ontario ; Ages 4-5: Blaze Miller, Lancaster; Ages 6-8: Jacques Follette, Penfield; Ages 9-11: Tim Lewis , Ontario ; Ages 12 and up: Tom Harden, Ontario .

Next week, Friday, June 27, is “Fan Appreciation Night” at Spencer. Adults will be admitted for just $6 each.

On track will be the rain delayed Twin-25’s for the NASCAR Touring Modifieds, delayed from June 13, plus a complete program of NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Street Stocks and Super Six machines. The original schedule showed Twins for the Weekly Modifieds. The schedule was altered to be just one 35-lapper for that division to help make room for the NASCAR Touring Mods Double Point Twins.

The NASCAR Modified Tour races both offer double track points. Race time on Friday, June 27 starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
