A wet track was the best thing –
and the worst thing – for Tim Brown at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday.
After a brief rainstorm fell upon the Stadium, qualifying for the Farm
Bureau Insurance Modified Series was cancelled. Instead, the competitors
started the first 25-lapper in the order of points – placing Tim Brown of
Cana, Va. on the pole.
Brown shot out into the lead with Burt Myers of Walnut Cove claiming second
right behind him. The #83 car of Brown coasted around the track, dominating
the competition. For most of the race, Burt Myers was no threat to Brown.
When a caution late in the race tightened up the field for the restart,
Burt Myers gave a few good taps to the bumper of Brown. The nudges didn’t
affect Brown, who continued to soar around the track.
But during the final lap, slippery conditions on the track would wreak
havoc for Brown. He slid as he went around turns three and four, allowing
Burt Myers the opportunity to slip by him and take the win. “Somebody blew a
motor and there was oil everywhere. I let off the gas in the oil and it just
slid - and Burt got by me,” said Brown.
“Of course the track was a little slick, but it was somewhat dried up. It
was the same for everybody,” said Myers. “I think he just got in a little
too hot for the track conditions at the time,” said Myers.
“I cheated myself,” said Brown. “I should’ve known the oil was there and
let off earlier and stayed to the bottom. I drive that thing all I can every
lap, and I screwed up.”
Brown was able to get back in line and finish second. Lee Jeffreys of High
Point finished third with Bobby Hutchens of Lexington taking fourth.
The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Jeremy Stoltz of Walkertown to the pole for
the start of the second Modified 25-lapper with Alfred Hill of Jonesville
starting on the outside front row. The two battled fiercely for the lead
during the first few laps. But as they concentrated on besting one another,
they both drove wide into turn one on the 7th lap. The third place car of
Walkertown resident Michael Clifton saw an opening and pounced.
Clifton passed Stoltz and Hill to claim the lead and the win. “We’ve had a
good car week in and week out. Certain things tonight just came in our
favor,” said Clifton. Stoltz took second, Hill claimed third, and Randy
Butner of Pfafftown finished in fourth.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Ryan Robertson of
Winston-Salem led start to finish for the 60-lapper on Saturday. Michael
Adams of Yadkinville finished in second. Jim Shoaf of Lexington took third.
Ethan Stoltz of Walkertown fought his way to the front to take the
checkered in the 20-lap race for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Matt
Cotner of Rural Hall finished in second with Ryan Neslon of Winston-Salem
taking third place.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville
claimed victory in the first 15-lap race. Bobby Yountz of Clemmons took the
checkered in the second 15-lap race, but Yountz was dropped back to last
place after it was found he did not meet minimum weight requirements. Nolan
Marshall of Tobaccoville was awarded the win.
