Brown Battles Back to Defend Points Margin at Bowman Gray
Qualifying gave Myers golden opportunity to gain points.
Tim Brown’s 2008 season has earned
him the nickname “the King of the 25-Lappers.” But Burt Myers beat Tim Brown
at his own game at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday, setting up a situation
that could have changed the points ladder for the Farm Bureau Insurance
Modified Series.
Out of the first 8 qualifying attempts in 2008, Tim Brown of Cana, Va. has
qualified on the pole all 8 times. But on Saturday, the #83 car was the
first to qualify, turning a disappointing time that was soon bested.
Then another competitor was faster, another competitor was faster, another
competitor was faster – Brown could see his starting position move further
and further back. “Once the first car beats you, you’re ticked off. If
you’re not on the pole, it doesn’t matter,” said Brown.
Myers, a resident of Walnut Cove, hit the track and claimed the pole for
himself. Myers entered the event in the second spot on the points ladder, 38
points behind Brown. Fans of Burt Myers knew this could be his chance to
gain some ground in the points race against Brown.
But Myers knew he could only control where one car finished: his. “Some of
my crew came on the radio and made a comment about where Tim was running,
but I told my crew that really I could care less. If we sit on the pole and
win the race tonight, we tried our hardest and that’s all we can do,” said
Myers.
Starting on the pole and winning the first 25-lap race is exactly what
Myers did, taking the checkered in a dominating performance. But then Tim
Brown’s real moment of truth came. As winner of the first race, Myers had
the task of randomly drawing a number – the number of competitors that would
be inverted for the start of the second race. Myers could draw an 8, 10, 12,
14, or 16 – and with Brown finishing 11th, a draw of 8 or 10 would give Tim
a middle of the pack starting position.
Brown’s luck was good: Myers drew the 12, which put Brown on the outside
pole for the start of the second race. Rookie John Lain started on the pole,
but Brown claimed the lead within a few laps. Brown brought home the win,
defending his points lead and keeping the margin between him and Myers at a
respectable 32 points.
Myers remains second in the points, gaining 6 points on Brown. Lee Jeffreys
of High Point stays third in the points.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Ronnie Clifton of
Walkertown remains in the lead. Kenny Bost of Kernersville, who was second
entering last event, slips down to third in the points after being
disqualified from Saturday’s races. A technical inspection after the race
found Bost, along with Jim Shoaf, to be driving with illegally modified
“Crate Motors.” The motors are supposed to be unmodified and sealed, and
both drivers were disqualified from both Sportsman races on Saturday. Kenny
Bost is appealing the decision.
Ryan Nelson of Winston-Salem won the 20-lap race for the 104.1 WTQR Street
Stock Series on Saturday, moving him up to tie David Sumner of Trinity for
the points lead. Matt Cotner of Rural Hall remains in third.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, disaster struck for Jimmy
Absher of Rural Hall, who was leading in the points entering the event.
Absher was involved in a non-racing related automobile accident just the day
before the last event at Bowman Gray Stadium. Absher broke his leg and will
be unable to compete for the remainder of the season.
Johnny Burke of Midway claims the points lead in Absher’s absence. Points
contender Matt Hill of Yadkinville had misfortunate after misfortune on
Saturday. Hill moves up to second in the points after Absher didn’t compete,
but he still loses a lot of ground to Burke.
This Saturday night is the best racing for the absolute best price: it’s $1
Ladies’ Night, where females are admitted for only a buck. There will be
racing for all divisions and the always wild Davidson Auto Salvage Chain
Race. Ticket gates open at 6 PM for practice runs, qualifying is at 7:10 PM,
