Kevin Timmerman, from Ontario , NY , led all 35-laps in the NASCAR Weekly Modified feature on his way to victory last Friday evening at Spencer Speedway. Timmerman had to overcome eight yellow flag restarts on the way.

“On any night here there are 10 to 12 cars that could take the win,” stated the winner. “We had a lot of help this week getting our car back together after the wreck we had the week before.”

In Street Stock action Don Stevens picked up his third feature win of the season and pulled to within a mere four points of divisional points leader Phil Alhart Jr.. Alhart maintained his point’s advantage by finishing second to Stevens in the 20-lap feature.

Kris Hillegeer finally returned to victory lane in the Super Six division after a three week run of bad luck. This evening his luck turned around as the leader, Keith Butler, saw the rear end on his newly purchased, former Billy Semmler owner, Pontiac with just two laps remaining in the 20-lap race. Butler ’s exit allowed Hillegeer to lead the final two circuits to claim his sixth win of the season at Spencer.

A multi-car tangle in the first turn at the start of the NASCAR Weekly Modified feature saw Buck Catalano, Daryl Lewis Jr., Mark Cline and Tom Fecteau all spin off the track and into the first turn grass. The race had to be red flagged at that time to allow safety crews to clean up the accident scene.

Once underway pole-sitter, Kevin Timmerman rocketed out into the lead with Jeff Polaski tight on his rear bumper. The race would remain green until lap 14 when third place runner, Andy Lewis, slowed exiting the fourth turn and coasted to a stop on the front stretch. The air cleaner unit atop Tony Hanbury’s number 40 blew off just as the yellow flew. Officials sent Hanbury, who was running seventh at the time, to the pits and forced him to replace the unit before rejoining the race, some two laps downs.

All of this action up front allowed Eric h Stritzel to restart in third, with Andy Jankowiak in fourth. Lap 17, saw Jankowiak and Buck Catalano, who returned to the track after the aborted start of the race, come together in the first turn. Both cars were taken to the pits. Jankowiak would later try and return, however his car was never competitive from this point on.

Up front Timmerman and Polaski were able to pull away some on Stritzel, until a yellow would fly. On car that seemed very competitive was the number 23 of Phil Wehrheim. Wehrheim had earlier won his heat race and was moving through the field when he seemed to get crossed up and come to a halt in the fourth turn on lap 28 causing the yellow.

One late race yellow came, lap 32, when Terry Cheetham, Rick Kluth and Daryl Lewis Jr. all came together in the first turn. Last week’s feature winner, Cheetham, pulled pit-side, with Lewis and Kluth returning to the battle.

At the checkers it was Timmerman, followed by Polaski, Stritzel, point leader Jeff Hamman and Ryan Beeman rounding out the top five.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature would go green-to-checkers. Mitchell Wright took the lead at the drop of the green. Don Stevens pulled to the outside and tried to take the lead from Wright, but fell short. On lap five, Stevens took to the low side of the track exiting the second turn and completed the pass for the lead. Phil Alhart Jr. and Dan Scott would follow a lap later to take second and third respectively.

Stevens was able to pull away from the pack and glide home to his third feature win of the season. Alhart Jr., Scott, Wright and John Semmler rounded out the top five finishers.

“I tried to use the outside for a bit,” stated Stevens, “”But I had to use the low side to make the pass on him (Wright).”

The Super Six feature saw Kris Hillegeer spin in the first turn causing the race to be restarted. One lap later, Van Grant, who had led the first circuit, pulled to the infield with an overheating problem. Keith Butler passed his cousin Craig for the lead and pulled out to a thirty car advantage. On lap eight the yellow flew when Joe Bailey looped between the third and fourth turns. All of this time, Hillegeer was working his way through the field. This yellow allowed him to pull closer to the leaders.

On lap 11, Hillegeer passed Craig Butler for second using an inside pass exiting the second turn. Hillegeer then set his sights on Keith Butler. With just two laps remaining Hillegeer’s efforts were looking to fall short, when the yellow flew for Jesse Parks, who stopped in the second turn. During this yellow Keith Butler’s rear end started to billow smoke causing him to turn onto pit road. Hillegeer found himself in the lead. Two laps later he had the win. Craig Butler finished second followed by Patti Davenport and Bailey. Keith Butler was credited with fifth.

“We were not the fastest car out there tonight,” commented Hillegeer, who eluded that his brother Ryan would be behind the wheel next week, as he would be trying out the modifieds again. “We were in the right place at the right time when it counted.”

Kids’ Bicycle races started off the night’s activities. Sponsored by Upstate BMX, located in Newark , four different age groups competed. In the 2-3 year old category it was Trinity Miller, from Lancaster , wheeling her tri-cycle across the finish line first. Luke Corcimiglia, from Webster, won the 4-5 year old category.
