Bittersweet Victories at Bowman Gray Stadium
Burt Myers and Brent Elliott dedicate wins to Brian Pack

Although the crowds shouted just as
loudly, the cars were just as powerful, and the adrenaline rush of Modified
racing action was just as intense – something just didn’t feel quite right
on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium.
On Friday afternoon, Brian Pack, driver of the number 81 Modified, lost his
life in a tragic motorcycle crash. Still reeling from the news of his
passing, competitors organized to honor their fellow driver by displaying
decals in remembrance of him. The night began on a somber note as Pack’s #81
car was silently pushed around the track, and Pack’s car took one last lap
during the parade laps of the first Modified race.
Burt Myers of Walnut Cove dedicated his night to the Pack family. Myers
qualified on the pole and led start to finish in the first 25-lapper for the
Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series.

Tim Brown of Cana, Va. has dominated qualifying for the first half of the
year, and Myers is pleased to turn the tables on his rival. “We’ve just been
tuning on the car and making minor adjustments. The track changes as the
year goes on,” said Myers.
Myers claimed the lead when the green dropped and held on to the top spot
despite some hard taps to the rear from Tim Brown. As the race went on,
Myers began to pull away and relieve some of the pressure he was feeling
from Brown. “The longer we ran it seemed like the better my car got,” said
Myers. “Tim and I are going to race each other hard, but we’re going to race
each other clean. I knew that Tim wasn’t going to do anything that would
jeopardize either one of us.”
Tim Brown finished in second, with Robert Jeffreys of Winston-Salem taking
third.
The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Brent Elliott of Denton to the pole and Brad
Robbins of Winston-Salem to the outside pole for the start of the second
race. The two front-row starters tried to play mind games with each other –
and after a few false starts, the green finally came out. Elliott grabbed
the lead, and Susan Harwell of Elkin moved up to second.
Kevin Powell of Winston-Salem was behind Harwell and began delivering some
stout taps to the rear of Harwell. One bump caused Harwell to lose control.
Powell slipped by, but Harwell rammed into Brad Robbins. Robbins was driven
hard into the guard rail. The wreck caused a massive pileup as the entire
field behind Robbins slammed the brakes.
Harwell was sent to the rear for her involvement in the wreckage. Kevin
Powell claimed second and Rookie Andrew Durham of Roaring River moved up to
third.
Elliott held on to take the win. “We had a bad qualifying lap and started
in the rear for the first race,” said Elliott. “We just made a lot of
adjustments and used the first race as a test session. We finally got it
running pretty good and when we started on the pole, it just up and went.”
Like Myers, Elliott dedicated the win to the Pack family. “The win felt
good, but it just didn’t feel right,” said Elliott. “We’re really going to
miss him.”
Kevin Powell finished in second. Andrew Durham claimed third.

In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kyle Edwards of King took
the checkered for the first 20-lapper. Rookie Michael Adams of Yadkinville
finished in second, with Ryan Robertson of Winston-Salem finishing in third.
For the second 20-lapper, Derek Stoltz brought home the win. Gary Ledbetter
of Lexington claimed the second place spot. Ronnie Barron of Lexington took
third.

John McNeal claimed the checkered in the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR
Street Stock Series, with David Sumner of Trinity and Doug Wall of Pfafftown
taking second and third.

In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Johnny Burke of Midway won
the first 15-lapper. Chuck Wall of Clemmons took victory in the second
15-lap race.
