The Planet Aid Hobby Stocks took center stage at Lee USA Speedway on Friday night, running a 50-lap distance to contest the Doug Ricker Memorial, their biggest race of the year.
With a full field on hand for the event, three qualifiers were run to set the field for the feature, with Jim Russell, Alby Ovitt, and Jim Shorey picking up the wins.
Shorey outran polesitter Eric Hoffman to grab the lead when flagman Bryon Callen unfurled the green for the feature event, and the race was on.
The 24-car field of Hobby Stocks ran clean and green for the first 19 circuits before Hans Meier spun to bring caution on the field. Shorey remained on the point for the restart, with Russell and Chris Titcomb battling hard when racing resumed.
Six laps later at the crossed flags, Shorey continued to lead, but Todd Bregy had joined the lead battle in second, with Titcomb, Wade Worster, Russell and Alby Ovitt next in the running order.
Bregy managed to get past Shorey for the lead ten laps later, but when the field lined up for a restart on lap 37, Ovitt was up to third and looking for more. He slipped past Shorey into second, and went for the lead with time running out.
With two to go, Ovitt was within striking distance of Bregy, and the two were almost dead even at the white flag. Ovitt worked the outside line perfectly on the final lap, pulling ahead to take down the win by less than a car length.
The top ten finishers were greeted in victory lane by the Ricker family, and the combined efforts of the folks at Planet Aid along with Lee USA’s own Tanguay Racing sent all ten of them home with beautiful trophies commemorating the night.
Ovitt took home the winner’s trophy, with Bregy, Shorey, Bill Fiske, Russell, Worster, Brian Thompson, Ron Washburn, Titcomb, and Geoff Rollins picking up second through tenth.
The Roadrunners had opened up the night’s feature event action with another strong performance coming from rookie contender Lance Barthelemy, who stormed to his second victory of the year.
Veteran Dana Faulkner had led the first couple of laps ahead of Timmy Johnson before mechanical woes dropped him off the pace. By halfway, Barthelemy and Ricky Porter had moved to the front, with the rookie leading the way.
Barthelemy was unbeatable this time out, and he went the distance to score a convincing win. Porter picked up second place honors, followed by Johnson, Chris Jacobson, Jim Piaseczny, Steve Nichols, Billy Osborne, Chris Kingsley, Anthony Nadeau, and Kenny Piaseczny.
Eddie Witkum, Jr. and his crew spent most of the night making major front end repairs in the pit area after a hard wreck in qualifying, but the effort paid off with another Mac Tools Small Block Super victory, after a last-lap pass sent the Callahan Motorsports gang to the winner’s circle yet again.
2005 champion Mike Ordway, Jr. looked to be well on the way to his first win aboard the Dave Bouchard machine, picking up the lead from Butch Valley , Jr. on the fourth lap and pulling away to a comfortable lead.
Witkum pulled up to Ordway’s back bumper at the white flag, and he used his patented outside groove run to motor past down the backstretch. Witkum went on to collect the checkers, with Ordway, Jeff Locke, Bob Millett, Jr., Valley, Justin Belfiore, Dan Bowes, Joey Scanlon, Danny Lane , and Jim Lowrey, Jr. the rest of the top ten.
Rookie Joey Lovejoy jumped out to the early lead in the One Stop Toy Shop sponsored NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model main just as a light rain began to fall.
Lovejoy looked strong early on, but Mother Nature was stronger, and rain was the big winner once again, sending the Late Models back to the pits, postponing the Prime Storage Late Model Sportsmen and Ironman feature events as well.
