“God was on my side tonight,” said
Tim Brown of Cana, Va. about his victory in the 50-lap Modifed race on
Friday at Bowman Gray Stadium.
The night before the race, Jerry Boger, Brown’s crew member for 17 years,
passed away. The situation hit Brown hard, and he was determined to go out
and win one in honor of Boger’s memory.
Brown was able to do so, soaring ahead of the pack and claiming the
checkered. Brown strengthens his points lead.
Meanwhile, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove was working his way up through the
field. Taking advantage of the double-file “choice” restart rule, Myers took
to the outside several times on his way to the front. After qualifying a
disappointing 10th, Myers was able to salvage a third place finish, losing
only 4 points to Brown in the points battle. Last year’s defending champion
remains second in the points, 31 points behind Brown.
Lee Jeffreys of High Point was able to climb up from sixth to a second
place finish, keeping him in the third spot on the points ladder. Bobby
Hutchens of Lexington is fourth in the points.
With only two events to go at the Stadium, the points races are drawing to
a close. There are two more shots for competitors to have their say in the
battles for champion. And, of course, the season finale will be a
double-points night – so anything can still happen.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, points leader Ronnie
Clifton of Walkertown was involved in a massive pileup that slowed down most
of the field. Points contender Kenny Bost of Kernersville was able to slip
by and pass Clifton. Bost went on to take third in the race; Clifton
finished fifth. Clifton remains the points leader, while Bost stays in
second.
Kyle Edwards of King drops down to third after the same pileup took him out
of the race. Tommy Neal of Walkertown, dropped down to fourth in the points
after finishing 16th on Saturday.
Ryan Nelson of Winston-Salem reclaims the top spot on the points ladder for
the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Nelson has been consistent all year, but
has recently suffered from a bout of bad starting positions.
David Sumner of Trinity, who was the points leader entering the event on
Saturday, had to end the race early after he was black-flagged for leaking
fluid. Sumner finished 18th, dropping him to second in the points.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Dale Barneycastle of
Mocksville won the 15-lapper in last event. Barneycastle maintains his
second place spot in the points and gains a lot of ground on Johnny Burke of
Midway, who is currently the points leader. Burke spun during the race and
finished 16th, narrowing the gap separating him from the rest of the field.
This Saturday is your last chance of the season to see the racing action
for only one dollar: it’s Winston-Salem Journal One Dollar Ladies’ Night,
where females get in for only one buck to see the racing action. There will
be racing for all four divisions, plus the season’s final 109 U-Pull-it
Demolition Derby. Ticket gates open at 6 PM for practice, and the first race
is at 8:00 PM. For directions, schedules, and other information, log on to
