Ricky Kluth, from Brockport , NY , has been coming to Spencer over the years. He has never been a regular weekly runner, but each year he has tried to win that elusive first modified feature victory. It all came together last Friday, August 22, at Spencer when Kluth held off the advances of Buck Catalano and took home the laurels in the 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified feature.

“First I want to thank everyone for coming to the races tonight and supporting us,” stated an elated feature winner. “I have to thank Buck Catalano for helping me to get this car going.”

Ironically Buck came home a close second to Kluth. Andy Jankowiak, Tony Hanbury and Kevin Timmerman rounded out the top five, all whom finished within a second of each other.

In the Street Stocks 20-lap feature Phil Alhart Jr. broke the three race winning streak of Don Stevens by taking the feature win. For Alhart Jr. it was his fourth feature win on the season.

“We had some pretty nervous moments at the beginning of this race when the car would not start,” related Alhart Jr.. “The Malin crew came over to help us start the car. I have to really thank them for that.”

Super Six point leader Keith Butler stretched out his points advantage by claiming his fourth win of the year.

Outside pole sitter, Kluth out dragged Steve Malin and took the lead at the start of the 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified. Daryl Lewis Jr. followed Kluth for second, as Malin fell into third.

Buck Catalano, who started in fifth, seemed to be on a mission as he passed both Lewis Jr. and Malin to take the runner up position. Catalano then fell in line right behind Kluth.

On lap eight, the yellow flew when Jeff Polaski went off the speedway in between the first and second turns. When the race resumed it was Kluth followed by Catalano, Andy Jankowiak, Tony Hanbury and Kevin Timmerman. These five broke away into a freight-train race at the front of the field.

Lap-after-lap, Catalano would try to duck low exiting the second turn in an effort to pass Kluth. Each time Kluth was able to pull him down the back straight.

On lap 29 the final yellow flew when Polaski looped out at the other end of the speedway, turns three-four.

The final six laps proved to be a real nail-bitter as Catalano tried every one of his tricks to pass Kluth for the lead. As the checkers fell it was Kluth, Catalano, Jankowiak, Hanbury and Timmerman all crossing the finish line within a second of each other.

This finish set up an interesting point situation, with just two weeks of racing left. Catalano’s second place translated in him taking the lead by one point over Jankowiak, 768 to 767. One point back of that, 766, is Hanbury. Timmerman sits fourth with 753 points. Points earned in the heat races over the next couple of weeks will mean a whole lot more then ever, as will top finishes in the features.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature went green-to-checkers with Phil Alhart Jr. looking as strong as ever. The race was in jeopardy of a yellow on lap two when Dan Scott and Don Stevens came together in the third turn, sending both cars spinning. However both cars quickly returned to the back of the field to start a charge towards the front.

Alhart Jr. took the lead on lap three after ducking under Mitchell Wright exiting the second turn. Alhart then pulled out to a five car advantage over Wright. Another five cars back was Billy Semmler. Roger Worden would run in fourth until the last lap when Stevens passed him for the position.

Alhart closed the point gap on Stevens by taking the win. However Stevens still holds a 12 point advantage with just two weeks remaining in the 2008 season.

The first feature of the night was the Super Six 20-lapper. On lap four the lights on the back stretch went out forcing race officials to red flag the race. A fifteen minute delay saw the lights return. Up front Keith Butler, who took the lead from Patti Davenport in a daring three wide pass for the lead exiting the fourth turn on lap two, remained the leader. Tucked tight on his rear bumper was Skip Powers. These two would pull away to a half track lead over third place Kris Hillegeer when the checks fell. Craig Butler and Davenport rounded out the top five finishers.

In the Super Six point battle, Keith Butler holds a 91 point lead over Davenport . In 14 races Butler has only finished outside the top five once and he has four feature wins on the season. Double points this Friday may help close that gap.

This coming Friday, August 29, will see a Three-Star program of NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Street Stocks and Super Sixes taking to the speedway at 7:30 p.m. sharp. But before that the kids will have their last chance on the track in 2008, with their third Bicycle race session of the season.

Kids will be divided into age categories and must have helmets to compete. Kids wishing to compete should register at Spencer’s main speedway office by 6:45 p.m. . Bicycle races will start at 7 p.m. on the front straight of the speedway.

The final Friday race of the year comes one week later, September 5. The Tour Type Modifieds have been scheduled to return and run a 30-lap feature.

”I don’t care if we get a few cars or a full field, this race will run no matter what and we will not increase the admission price to the race fans that night,” stated promoter John White .

Also topping the race card on September 5 will be the NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, running a 35-lap feature, and Street Stock and Super Six 20-lap main events. Racing will start at 7:30 p.m. . All of these races will determine the 2008 Spencer Speedway divisional champions.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
