TIMMERMAN AND SCOTT CLAIM WINS NUMBER THREE ON THE SEASON, BUTLER LOCKS UP THE SUPER SIX TITLE

Kevin Timmerman, from Ontario , NY , took the lead in the 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified feature on lap 11. From that point on he lead a determined Buck Catalano around the flat half mile oval. Catalano tried a number of moves, but had to settle for second behind Timmerman, who picked up his third feature victory of the season at Spencer.

“We should have locked up the points, but we face a real race next week for the title,” related Timmerman in reference to the tight NASCAR Weekly Modified point race this season. Timmerman’s victory moved him to within 13 points of leader Catalano. Tony Hanbury finished a strong third and remained second in points going into this Friday’s season finale.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw the Ford powered car of Dan Scott claim his third feature win on the season at Spencer. Scott, who started on the pole, led the entire 20-lap distance.

“I wanted to win so much tonight,’ stated Scott. “I have to thank everyone for coming out to support us tonight. My heart is still racing.”

Keith Butler, the current point leader, won the double point 20-lap feature in the Super Six division. He extended his point advantage over Patti Davenport to some 115 points. Butler could actually miss the final race and still claim the Super Six track title.

Eric h Stritzel took the early lead in the 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified main event. The yellow flag flew early, lap two, when Matt Lees set the field scrambling when he spun in the third turn.

Stritzel maintained his lead over Jeff Polaski and Fred Taylor, but a spin by Daryl Lewis Sr. on the back stretch saw the yellow fly a second time on lap four.

The wildest action of the evening came on the next lap, when Ryan Beeman and Terry Cheetham got lose in the third turn. All looked well as both got going again, however Steve Malin exited the four turn backwards and almost slid into the 16 of Beeman on the front stretch. While all this was happening Daryl Lewis Jr. and Rick Kluth came together both exiting the first turn into the tire barrier. Up front Tony Hanbury was able to pass Stritzel for the lead.

Hanbury now found himself with Kevin Timmerman glued to his tail. On lap 10, Timmerman took to the outside exiting the second turn, in a strong move, to take the lead. Two laps later, third place Buck Catalano, put the same outside move on Hanbury . The yellow flag interrupted this move when Cheetham slowed exiting the fourth turn with a flat left front tire.

Once underway Catalano moved by Hanbury and tagged onto the rear bumper of Timmerman. These two broke away from the rest of the field, but a yellow on lap 20 for a spin by Lewis Sr., again on the backstretch, would tighten the field up again.

Timmerman and Catalano were able to pull away again as a race for third developed between Hanbury and Stritzel. Fred Taylor, running in fifth, was doing his best to hold back points contender Andy Jankowiak, as these two battled for fifth.

With the white flag flying the yellow had to interrupt the finish. Jeff Polaski and Ed die Hawkins both spun around in the fourth turn. This set up a gree-white-checker finish that saw the race run 36 laps in all. Timmerman held off Catalano the remaining two circuits to take the win. Catalano finished second with Hanbury in third. Stritzel and Taylor rounded out the top five finishers.

The season long point battle will come down to just four drivers. Buck Catalano currently leads the way with 829 points. Hanbury sits second, 819, ten points back. In third is Timmerman with 816 and three points back of him is Andy Jankowiak with 813. Any one of these drivers can take the 2008 Spencer Speedway title.

The 20-lap Street Stock main saw only one yellow, lap one. Jim Steffenhagen Jr. was hooked together with another car and spun exiting the second turn. He would pit and later return two laps down to the field.

Dan Scott led a four car freight-train of Don Stevens, Phil Alhart Jr. and Mitchell Wright as they pulled out to their own race. On lap five Alhart Jr. dropped low in the first turn and took second from Stevens.

Wright dropped off the led pack by lap 12. Up front the lead remained with Scott. Scott would earn his third feature win of the year with Alhart Jr. finishing a close second. Stevens, Wright and Duke Wolanski completed the top five finishers.

Stevens maintains the point lead by a mere 9 points over Alhart Jr. Scott sits third, 32 points behind Stevens and has just an outside probability of winning the track championship. It will come down to these three drivers next week for the championship.

The double point Super Six 20-lapper saw the race run green-to-checkers. Jesse Parks led the first three laps. Keith Butler moved low down the back stretch to take the lead on lap four. Butler then raced off into a “zone” of his own. Skip Powers passed Parks on lap 10 and tried to run down Butler but settled for second nearly a half straight away behind Butler at the checkers. Ryan Hillegeer inherited third when Parks went pit-side on lap 16, and would finish there. Patti Davenport and Craig Butler rounded out the top five finishers.

SPENCER RACERS: The third round of the kids’ bicycle races was run before the start of the NASCAR races. In the 2-3 year old group, Trinity Miller, from Lancaster , won on her tricycle. Jacob Ballast, from Hamburg , NY , won the 4 to 6 year old group. Tim Lewis, from Ontario , took top honors in the 7 to 9 year old category, while Cassidy Imele, from Spencerport, won the 10 and up age group category.

The 2008 Spencer oval track season comes to an end this Friday, September 5, with a Five Star finale featuring the NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Street Stocks and Super Sixes. Added to the final race card of the season is a 30-lap NASCAR Tour Type Modified feature and a Four-Cylinder special. Both the Street Stock and NASCAR Weekly Modified point titles are up for grabs. Race time starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
