LATE MODELS REMAIN IN RIVERHEAD RACEWAY PLANS FOR 2009
Riverhead, N.Y. Nov. 10th
By Bob Finan

Ever since the final checkered flag of 2008, a whirlwind of rumor and innuendo had surrounded the Late Model division at Riverhead Raceway. This past Friday track owners Barbara and Jim Cromarty ended all the speculation by happily announcing the division will remain part of the 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

The division, which was tabbed "Late Model Thunder" in its glory days of the 1980s and '90s will run an eight race schedule as the Cromartys hope the limited schedule will aid the class in regaining the exciting racing and car counts from those glory days. The Late Model troops will be part of the 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series opener on Saturday May 2nd as the track kicks off its 58th season of racing and family entertainment.

Roger Oxee of Peconic is the all-time leading winner of Late Model races at the historic quarter mile, while Tom Rogers Jr. of Patchogue won the 2008 championship. Both are among those happy to hear that the Cromartys have put all the rumors to rest.

Joining the Late Models on the May 2nd race card will be the headlining NASCAR Modifieds, Figure Eights, Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Trucks. Qualifying is set for 4:30 pm and feature event racing in 2009 will start weekly at 6:00 pm unless otherwise noted.

The complete 2009 Riverhead Raceway schedule, perhaps the most exciting and comprehensive yet put forth by Barbara and Jim Cromarty, is just hours away from being released to the track's website www.riverheadraceway.com.
