I received the following from Bob Finan this afternoon.

"It is with deep regret I inform the Riverhead Raceway community that Sunoco Race Fuels distributor Fred Bobb passed away suddenly on Tuesday December 9th, 2008 at the age of 50. His family is in the process of making arrangements this afternoon at a funeral home in the Merrick area."

I expect to have the arrangements this afternoon, and I will post them here as soon as I have them.

My condolences go out to Fred's family (including Charlie, whether he was "blood" family or not), his friends, and all of those touched by him.

I have known Fred since I was 12 and my neighbor sold gas at Westhampton for Fred. I will miss him incredibly, as I'm sure many others will. However, I realize that I am lucky just for having had the chance to know him. Godspeed, Fred. We will miss you.

Cant believe it. Fred was one of the few great people at riverhead raceway. You almost didnt mind paying Fred $10 a gallon. Cause you knew it was going to come with a a laugh. He will be dearly missed.

Fred was a staple at the track every saturday night. He was one of the few people in the pits you would look foward to see every time out on saturday. Many of us racers would not be able to race without him. It will not be the same getting gas without Fred present. Our condolences to his family. Adam Wheeler Modified #20 race team.

Fred always knew how to treat his customers. I knew every week for 5 minutes there would be Rangers vs Devils banter and a joke. A big loss. God bless his family.

The Cozza Race team sends their deepest sympathy to Fred's family. Fred always shared photos of his daughter with John over the years. It was nice to see his son working with him this past year.

Sometimes life can be way too short and in Fred's case it was.
Godspeed Fred...you will be missed by many.

Based on the large crowd at Freds Funeral the man touched many people in his short life. Sometimes we go through this life and we dont take the time to thank those around us. Fred was a perfect example of someone who would. I remember picking up fuel last year and he was actually apoligetic for having to raise his prices. He understood that we do this for fun and every penny counted. Then he took the time to ask how I was doing and if I would be able to race more often. It wasnt small talk , he really cared. As we go through this Holiday season lets take the time to be thankful for what we have, and who are friends and family are, it can be gone in an instant. I know we all have a little Fred Bobb in all of us, and who wouldn't want that.

My condolences to Fred's family. He was a huge part of my life when I ran Riverhead. I can still see him wanting to talk to me about Bose stereo equipment when all I wanted was my 5 gals so I can get ready for practice. Boy I am sure glad I took the extra 5 minutes with him each Saturday to give him the same great customer service that he always gave to me. A terrible loss but I am sure he is with a lot of friends.

Godspeed
