View Full Version : Porkroll - The Thread

There are plenty of topics that eventually discuss pork roll. I figured one thread should be devoted solely to it. My contribution to start:

I listen to a radio show out here in Michigan called Deminski and Doyle. They used to be on in NJ, but are now "native" to Michigan.

Their topic today was "best tasting food that is horrible for you", as they were eating "Luther's" in studio today. A Luther is a bacon cheesburger that uses a Krispy Kreme donut cut in half instead of a roll. I called in and got on the air to contribute the Lumberjack. A Lumberjack is served at the Sawmill Café in Seaside Park, NJ and is a cheeseburger with pork roll on top of it and then another piece of cheese on top of that. Deminski is originally from NJ so he knew what pork roll is and loved it but Doyle had no idea. That meant we had to educate him. Anytime I can start my day by teaching someone about pork roll - that is a positive sign.

-Mike

Pork Roll an indigenous species to the Northeast especially NJ.

Pork Roll season is all year but you are only allowed to hunt them with bow and arrow.

They have appeared as far east as Stafford and Thompson and on the eastern end of LI as far east as Riverhead (Summer months only)

It's a quandry. I dont know if I should be spreadhing the word of prok roll or try to keep it as NJ's quirkly little secret. I guess Ted's post tells which way the winds are blowing, but that's OK.

Here's the next big question: Pork Roll or Taylor Ham. I sez Pork Roll, but I think in the northern part of NJ many say Taylor Ham.

NO DIFFERENCE- they're one and the same and have always been "pork roll" to me! I just grew up seeing the Taylor Ham brand in the fridge and old habits die hard.
Sorry for the confusion Alex...there was no need for me to complicate such a beautiful thing like pork roll. By the way, the pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich I made was awesome. I even got compliments on my cooking from the wife! You just can't screw up pork roll!!!

I guess I didn’t tell ya but as the President for the Nat'l Pork Roll Council (I like the title Liquid) this is my ride for next year. I bought a brand new Troyer chassis, Norm (and Linda) built an engine for me and we are racing a full TVMRS, RoC, Whelen North and South tours as well as any other big paying shows on the few nights off. We will offset that with racing on Saturday nights, when possible, at the Flemington Fairgrounds.

We are sponsored by Taylor Provisions. Thanks to RGee for the photo and Mike Clayton for doing the wrap for the car. We will be at New Smyrna for all 8 nights of racing. See ya there!

Wikipedia tells us -

Pork roll is a type of sausage-like meat product commonly available in and around New Jersey. In North Jersey it is usually called Taylor Ham.[1] The product was originally developed late in the 19th century by John Taylor of Trenton, New Jersey, though several firms produce it today.

Taylor originally called it "Taylor's Prepared Ham", [2] but was forced to change the name after the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was passed, since the product did not meet the new legal definition of "ham". The new name was "Pork Roll" and it was marketed as both "Taylor's Pork Roll" and "Trenton Pork Roll". Competitors marketed products with similar names like "Rolled Pork" and "Trenton style Pork Roll" and were sued by Taylor. A 1910 legal case ruled that the words "Pork Roll" could not be trademarked.[2]

Although the product is widely consumed and enjoyed, it resists accurate description.[1] Some people compare the taste and/or texture to SPAM, Treet, baloney, mild salami, or US-style Canadian bacon. In 1910 it was described as "a food article made of pork, packed in a cylindrical cotton sack or bag in such form that it could be quickly prepared for cooking by slicing without removal from the bag."[2]

The "Although the product is widely consumed and enjoyed, it resists accurate description. Some people compare the taste and/or texture to SPAM, Treet, baloney, mild salami, or US-style Canadian bacon." Got me.

How this thread got to 4 pages is anyone's guess. Dont blame me, fastbackss started this nonsense.

The video showed one critical thing. You gotta "notch" the pork roll. Put a little cut in the top, bottom and both sides. If you don’t, the pork roll will bubble up in the middle and it wont cook evenly. A properly cut pork roll will resemble an iron cross (or a Maltese cross for those who are politically correct.)

Sorry you didn't enjoy the pork roll you tried with your breakfast, but it really tastes best as part of the pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich. The egg and cheese enhance the flavor of the pork roll like a good red pasta sauce enhances red wine!

Man: You sit here, dear.

Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!
Man: Why can't she have egg bacon spam and sausage?
Wife: THAT'S got spam in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam... (Crescendo through next few lines...)

For Howie who prefers Spam, the Monty Python Spam script:

Man: You sit here, dear.
Wife: All right.
Man: Morning!
Waitress: Morning!
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam...
Waitress: ...spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...
Vikings: Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!
Waitress: ...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like spam!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!
(Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam.
Wife: I don't like spam!
Man: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.
Man: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then?
Waitress: You mean spam spam spam spam spam spam... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings: (Singing elaborately...) Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Spam spam spam spam!

Thanks Jill. The video did it!! I had to have "Spam Spam Egg Spam Spam Egg" this morning for breakfast. Don't tell Axel ('cause he thinks I don't like Pork Roll, but a trip to Shop Rite is in order to buy some more Taylor's PR also). I really need to get to NJ to have the "real" PR Sandwich!

Axel: If you are going to be presenting the winner of The Turkey Derby with a Pork Roll, you must be suitably attired.

Send me your tee-shirt size and I will be happy to contribute, from their official web site, one "Pork Roll - it's a Jersey Thing" tee shirt.

Linda
