I was at this race, as I was for most all of the double/triple headers at Martinsville from about 1977 on. This was the first year the Late Model Stock Cars raced the same day as the Modifieds and Busch cars.

I don't think I made this race but I have so many nice memories from the springtime races at Martinsville - especially the triple headers! What a field, huh? I forgot that Jerry Cranmer snagged the pole for this one! The Modified world was real healthy back then and the transition to the Tour concept had gone better than many had expected...of course, the Modified world was about to sail into some real rough waters a relatively short time after this race losing both Evans and Jarzombek at this speedway. That's one memory I hate bringing up about Martinsville but it is what it is.

Nearly 30 years later and 3rd place then still pays more than it does to win a southern race.
