Poker tournaments have become quite the popular attraction over the past few years and now Mahoning Valley Speedway has incorporated a unique format for the track’s headline Modified class that will play out with a driver’s best hand of stud poker after five extra distance races.

The Mahoning Valley Speedway Poker Tournament is a special five race series for the Modifieds. Each race will be a 100-lap, $3000 to win feature and at the end of the series there will be a $5000 jackpot which will be divvied between the top three drivers who were able to put together the best poker hand.

Here’s the deal.

At the end of each of the five special events, the top 13 finishers will receive a card all from the same suit starting with an ace going to the winner and so on. The suit, clubs, spades, hearts or diamonds, will be picked at the end of each feature by the winner who will draw a card to what suit the race was run in that evening.

Each of the five races will be done in the same manner and at the end of the final race the top three drivers with the best poker hand will share in the jackpot.

First place pays $2500 with $1500 for second and $1000 for third. A driver must compete in all five 100-lappers to be eligible for a chance at the pot.

There is a separate entry fee for the tournament and thus far there has been quite a bit of interest leading up to the first 100-lap showdown which will be Opening Day, April 18.

If the odds play out right one very lucky driver has the possibility of earning over $17,500 if he or she can win all five races and draw the best poker hand.

Based on his average finish from last year’s 100-lap runs, Brian DeFebo would have claimed the tournament.

Former track champion Eric Beers is one of the first entries and has signed up for all five features. Given his odds on how well he does at Mahoning long distance shows he’s no doubt thinking jackpot. But, it’s never easy at Mahoning as some of the best racing takes place in the century runs and it’s almost commonplace that the win comes right down to the final lap.

Along with the April 18 opener the other tournament races will be held on June 6, July 25, August 22 and October 3.

Mahoning Valley will be open for business starting March 28 with an open practice session from noon to 4:00pm. April 4 and 11 are also test and tune days.

On Saturday night, April 18 starting at 6:00pm the 2009 season rolls off with all divisions which along with the Modifieds include the Late Models, Street Stocks, Dirt Modified and Pro4 Late Models.
