Practice is only a couple of weeks away and I for one cannot wait!

Anyhow, name these drivers from the past. WL- I know you know it, so no guessing for you, LOL:wave:

Let's just say that Timmy Maloney owned the 27 and the driver of the 68 is married to one of our Miss Evergreens.

Actually Tom Zajac Jr.

His father ran in the Late Model division back in the Spencer era using the same car number.

Geno
03-21-2009, 09:09 PM
Wow, you got me...I didn't think that it was Jimmy, but I did think that it was Ed Spencer (the old man)...

How about the other driver- I do know who that is :)

The #24 Mustang II modified was an ex-Jimmy car but was sold to Bojohnny in 1981. His drivers were Butch Yemelski and Jim Baker Jr. One of them drove this car as bought from the Spencers (not sure who drove it in this photo). In 1982 this car and an old coupe were both painted red and were numbered 3 and 3jr. The #90 was driven by New Jersey's Doug French. He don't look happy.

Geno, these are 2 of the Late Models that were built by Mountaintop's Jack Weigand. They ran so well they actually destroyed the class. No home built car could run against them. Guess who is driving the blue car in the outside lane.

EDIT: My mistake - 1 home built Late Model did run well against the Weigand cars - a blue #67

johnjr531
03-22-2009, 09:16 AM
Bob would the blue one on the ouside be dean Kline..

White Lightnin
03-22-2009, 09:26 AM
Nope - Dean was running Street Stock back then in his 1968 Camaro.

The car on the outside is Tom Luchi and of course the orange 71 was the late Don Kepping.

WOW it has been awsome to read all of this stuff in the past about the great racers that have come through here I do not know much about the past of the track but it is great to look at pictures and read about the past at the track.

Man makes me want to go racing even more now.

Keep them coming guys im learning alot.

White Lightnin
03-22-2009, 08:06 PM
Where did Tommy's car wind up??

It wound up right where you see it in the photo. Completely destroyed.

Frank Holby bought it from Tommy at the end of the 89 season and ran it as his first #20 car. Frank didn't have much luck running the last race of the season in 1990 and put it in the wall. Dale Fey won the title that day and Frank bought Dale's car.

Hi Guys. Hey Geno, thanks for the kind words. Same goes for you being a nice guy! Frank really did a number on my old car that day didn't he? I was there to see it and someone that was with me took that picture. My guess is it wound up on the scrap heap after that wreck.

I'll see if I can check in here from time to time and maybe post some old Street Stock pictures from 88 and 89, I have a ton. - Tommy Brown

The car in the middle is Frank Kunkle. He raced at Mahoning and Evergreen back then.

White Lightnin
03-25-2009, 09:44 AM
I remember Kunkel's #5 car having blue numbers and these are clearly red or orange. Anyone have a side view of the #5 car?

StrandRaceway
03-25-2009, 12:25 PM
If I remember right, the numbers were actually pink. When the 5 car had blue numbers, Rick Kirkendall was driving it. I think I still have a picture at home somewhere.:)

Geno
03-25-2009, 06:55 PM
The Woodshed was a popular place to hang out after the races...and probably before and during, LOL. You can see the burned out building in the background of this turn 3 & 4 spin.

Who was the driver?

Oh yeah, I think you're correct on Kunkel from one of the other pics.

That is the 77X1 of Bill Linkhorst Jr.

We used to bet who would spin out first Linkhorst or the 2Y orange Gremlin of Paul Yanac. It seemed that both of them always started on the front row due to the handicapping. The whole field would lay back waiting for the inevitable.

White Lightnin
03-26-2009, 08:11 PM
These are getting tough now. These photos are from when Bugsy Spencer began to run a lot of open competition races because the regular fields were disappearing(some things never change). Evergreen had a 321 cu in limit on it's Mods and Late Models back then (who thought of that no one knows since all other tracks were still running big blocks). Sometimes Bugsy got rid of the Mod rules and ran some of these special shows.

04 Gene Sharpstein

Impressive, WL! Here's the whole field.

Hard to see the cars clearly but I'll give it a shot. This is back when they combined the Mods and LMs together due to low car counts.

Red Late Model up front would either be 17 Mike Uhrin or 47 Jack Weigand
88 Monkowski
96 John Crawford Jr. (his Dad also owned the 96 PRO STOCK of Frank Zenzel)
40 Rich Post
44 Joe Merlino
28 Tony Siscone
Evil 1 Ron Williams
23 Ed Lilly
04 Gene Sharpstein
27 Ed Spencer Jr. Late Model
67 Rich Jensen Late Model

Pat, I believe back in 1981, when this was taken, the Sharpstein driving the 04 car was a regular at Shangra-La Speedway so it may be the same guy. You may not know me around the track as I left with the PRO STOCKS. I do remember your Dad winning a Thriller feature in 1989 driving that old #88Plymouth Fury.

03-27-2009, 04:43 PM
Yep, that was him. We still have the "old guy" running regularly in the FWDs; he even had a win last year at 63.

This must be the same guy. He sold me the car because he went back to dirt. He said that he loved the old Shangra La but could not get used to the new lay out at Chemung.

If you make it out this year, please stop by the pit and say hi.

Thanks
Pat

This is a picture of my first years car. The cage was cut off and put in a thriller. My second car is sitting in the woods. I couldn't get $1200 without the motor and trans so I pulled the rear pumpkin which was worth about $600 and the fuel cell and parked it in the woods.
This site is pretty cool. Someone told me that a picture of my car was on the tracks website so I checked it out. By reading some of the posts I'm sure that I know some of you guys here.

Who is the 55? photo by Dave Gehman

The 27 is Don Weida, the 58 is Frank Souchek and I believe that the 55 is John Best. 27 and 55 were old straight axle Dorney cars that went right to Mahoning Valley when Doney closed in 86 and MVS opened in 87. This photo was taken in 1988 at Evergreen as you can see that the pavement was still brand new. Frank Souchek was a driver from Mahanoy City that ran this same Pinto back in the Spencer era.

White Lightnin
04-04-2009, 05:48 PM
Mark Swartwood 1989

This car later got sold to Don Kellow and was run as one of his #65's. Donny stuck it in the 2nd turn fence when the steering wheel came off and took out the front clip. When Eddy Barber wanted me to build him his first car, we went to look at the cage in this car. We cut the cage out and caught half the field on fire. I remember this was a tall cage car and cutting 4 inches off of each leg before I used it.

On the 1/5 mile Dorney Park pavement, the left front tire only touched the ground for a split second, while braking into a turn, then up it came under throttle. I've seen some use the spare trailer tire on the LF.

Engines and bodies...I seem to recall Tex Christian running a Mercury with 6 2 barrel carbs in a cut down coupe. Pontiacs, DeSoto hemis, a fuel injected Buick, fuel injected Chevies and 427 Fords and Chevies all ran together.
Coupes and sedans ran along with some cut up pickup truck bodies. A sprint car and a Jaguar bodied car also ran there with the modifieds.

Almost forgot the modified Ford flatheads with 2 or 3 2 barrel carbs.

Quite a few of these pics are long before I wad even a twinkle in my parents eyes....I am blowing smoke out of my ears trying to recall back in the late 80's, I was a whole 7 years old, it is a wonder if I remember what I did yesterday, let alone 20 years ago.

How about steve clarks wifey, what the heck was her name?? Gloria! Not to mention another great female racer during the powder puffs, Eileen Weaver, mike weavers wife. At least that's what I think her name was.I remember the car was 84...Mark Zluchowski, I believe it was an orange 69.Gordon Buchman? John Heller? Kirk Buchanan? I remember Jerry Hildebrand, because he had a relation (or was it her neighbor?) at the track that I was great friends with, so if any one knows where Amy Thomas may be let me know, lost contact with her.

Sorry Bling, can’t help ya out with the huckleberry, but…

Steve and Gloria haven't been together for a long time. Not sure where the Weavers are, and the same goes for Mark Zluchowski.

Gordy Buchman and his wife Tiff (former Ms. Evergreen) have been to the track many times last season and I did see Jerry Hildebrand roaming around here & there.

We’ll see if we can get more out for this year’s reunion:)

The track photo guy back in the Spencer era was Art Lombardo from Pittston.

This was Tony's championship car in 1978 at The New Evergreen Speedway. When Tony went with the pavement Troyer in 1980 this car was sold to his brother-in-law, Rick McNeil. Later, in it's life, it became the black #44 that John Andretti got his start in at Dorney Park Speedway.

You really got to love those Euclid tire guard rails - what were they thinking?

Tommy Brown - great to hear from ya! Haven't talked to you in ages. Hope all is well. I can remember hanging out in the pits after the races with you and Dave Reynolds back in the day.

One quick correction on that Hirschman-McNeil car. That car did become a No. 44 that ran the Park, but it was the car Mike Schantzenbach drove for Mark Schafer. The 44 that John Andretti drove at the Park was a coupe owned by Cally Heffelfinger.

It is about 16 minutes long, but some of the footage is priceless. It contains Evergreen footage from the 50s, 70s, and up to 1983. There is also some brief footage from other area tracks.

This "Chip" still competes at the track. He's raced there at least once every year since the speedway reopened in 1988...:help:

The 2A of Darryl Amey. :applause:

I believe it was one of the Modifieds built by Lee Dolin. He never won a feature, in this car, due to running it in the years that #60 Tony Hirschman and the #85 of Gus Lewis were dominating the win column.
