He is the winningest driver at the fast half mile Spencer oval, earning some 143 feature career wins in four different divisions. Buck Catalano leads the Weekly Modified feature win total at Spencer with 48 feature wins. The division has gone through a number of name changes over the years including Grand American Modifieds, WIS Modifieds, SST Modifieds and now Weekly Modifieds.
When one looks at the fact that only 277 features have been run in that division at Spencer, Buck carries a 17.3% victory average in the Weekly Modified division.
Catalano won his last Weekly Modified feature nearly a year ago, winning on opening night, May 16, 2008 . From that point on he went winless on the season, but he accumulated an additional 10 top five finishes to win the 2008 Weekly Modified Points title.
Buck’s first Spencer championship came in 1979 when he took top honors in the Street Stock division. Since then, and counting last year, he has accumulated nine point titles at the speedway; 2-Street Stocks, 3-Weekly Modifieds, 2-Tour Type Modifieds, and 2-Late Model.
In 2002, Buck won national honors by earning the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Northeast Regional Championship title.
Spencer Speedway kicks off the 2009 season on May 22, with a 100 lap SST Modified feature, open to the Weekly Modified teams. Also on that race card will be a complete show of Street Stocks, Super Sixes and the debut of the new Four Cylinder Scorpion division. Race time is at 7:30 p.m.
Teams will have a chance to test their cars on the flat half mile Spencer oval on Friday, May 15, starting at 5 p.m. Teams will also have the opportunity to fill in all of the required paper work needed for the season. Pit admission will be charged, however the grandstands will be free on the 15th.
Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
