April 25 Season-Opening Tucson 200 using new restart rule among others.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Bowman Gray Stadium will continue its 60-year legacy of action-packed racing – but the very way in which the legendary track will continue this tradition is by introducing some exciting changes to the racing landscape for 2009.
The infamous Double-File “Choice” Restart Rule will be put into effect for several more races this season. The new rule was introduced just last year in the 100-lap races for the Modified Series and will now be extended to every Modified race in 2009 except for 25-lap races and the season-ending Carolina Farm Credit 150. The rule will also be put in place for the two longest races for the Sportsman Series – the annual 60-lap race and the MESCO Building Solutions Sportsman 100.
Replacing the old system of simply lining up single-file for restarts after caution, the Double-File “Choice” Restart Rule adds a new and dramatic element of strategy and excitement to long-distance races. Competitors may choose whether they take the green flag on the inside lane or the outside lane, giving them the opportunity to play it safe or to risk a drive in the outside groove.
Fans have shown overwhelming support for the new rule, while drivers have attested to the immense strategic challenge that it poses. The 2009 season brings Modified competitors even more chances to explore and refine their approach to double-file restarts – and the complexion of the long-distance Sportsman races will be drastically altered as well.
The first race of 2009 to showcase the new restart rule will be the April 25 Tucson 200, Bowman Gray Stadium’s season opening event for the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series. For decades, the Stadium has started their season off strongly with the longest and highest-paying race of the year. The Tucson 200 will be twice as long as any other race previously using the Double-File “Restart” Rule, so no one will know the full impact of the new rule until April 25.

Qualifying for the season-opener will occur on Friday, April 24, with the Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions competing Saturday, April 25.
