A pleasant evening saw fifty-two cars show up at Spencer Speedway for the track’s annual “Test & Tune” seasonal kickoff. A total of three and half sessions were run, starting at 5:45 pm through 8:15 pm when dark fell on the track.

A number of minor spinouts were recorded, including the first yellow of the 2009 season when Amy Catalano looped her newly purchased NASCAR Weekly Modified machine exiting the fourth turn. Her car was the former Eric k Rudolph number 45 modified.

The worst accident of the evening came during the third session when the red flag had to be displayed. David Sedlack spun exiting the second turn and made contact with the back stretch wall. Sedlack emerged uninjured, however his car suffer damage to the left rear wheel assembly.

Twenty NASCAR Weekly Modifieds headed the practice session as they prepare for the 100-lap SST Series Tour Race next week at Spencer. It will be the first time in Spencer Speedway history that a 100-lap kicks off the oval racing season.

Topping the times recorded in the NASCAR Weekly Modifieds was multi-time track champion, Buck Catalano. Buck has a new ride for 2009 and will be driving the yellow number 6 modified. Buck turned in a lap of 21.02 seconds for a speed of 85.633 mph. Of the eighteen NASCAR Weekly Modifieds that had times recorded, only one second existed between the fastest and the slowest. This should make for some close exciting open wheel racing this year.

The Tour Type Modifieds were also on hand. Four cars took to the speedway. These “land-rockets” recorded the fast time of the night, with Jan Leaty turning in a sub-20 second lap. Weekly runner, Jeff Hamman made the leap to this division in 2009. Currently the Tour Type cars will be on hand three times in 2009, including the annual NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on Saturday, July 11. This season the Whelen Tour race will run 155 laps. They will also be there for two Race of Champion events, a 75 lapper on June 19 and a 100-lapper on August 14.

Six Street Stocks were on hand with the 2007 champion, Jim Steffenhaggen Jr. turning in fast time during the final session before dark closed down the track. Steffenhaggen Jr. turned in a time of 23.87 seconds for a speed of 75.408 mph. This division has a crate option in 2009.

A number of new Super Six cars made the practice night, with nine cars taking to the track. Kevin Devuyst, driving the number 41 piloted last year by Skip Powers turned in the fast lap of 27.12 seconds. A number of race teams in this division have cars that are sharing drivers. Of those checking in on Friday they were; car 41-Powers/ Devuyst, car 89-Tim Farro/Phil Conklin/Brandon Allen and car 20-Fred Follette/Jim Sippel.

Eleven of the new Auto Value Scorpion division cars were ready to roll for the Test & Tune. This is the newest class at Spencer and will be competing weekly. Some twenty cars were being reported as being built. Fast time was set by former Weekly Modified driver Ed die Hawkins, with a 28.37second lap, 63.447 mph. Hawkin’s number 33 was the very first car on the track in 2009, as he led the field onto the asphalt oval for the first round of practice.

Finally there were two Cup Lite cars on hand. Currently this class is scheduled to appear three times at Spencer; June 5, July 31 and August 28. Scott Wylie set fast time with a 22.23 second lap for a speed of 80.972 mph.

This Friday, May 22, the 2009 NASCAR season steps off with VP Fuels night action. The NASCAR Weekly Modifieds will be running a 100-lap SST Super Series Tour race. Backing up this featured event will be a complete program of Street Stock, Super Six and Auto Value Scorpion car races. Starting time on Friday will be 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.

All times are unofficial, as transponders were not used. Each record shows - car number, driver, seconds and (mph)- Not every car was able to receive a time based on time on the track and length of timing session.
