Richard "Dick" Mills, a crew member who helped out countless local racing teams, was killed in an accident Sunday in Wheelock, Vt.
Mills, of West Haven, was 59 years old.
Vermont State Police told the Associated Press that Mills was killed when he struck a moose while traveling south on Interstate 91 in Wheelock.
Mills was returning from Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, Vt. where he had been working with driver Shelly Perry of Ashaway, R.I. for the True Value Modified Racing Series event at the track.
"Ever since I started in a Mini Stock he was always there helping," Perry said. "He's was always helping so many people at the track, I can't even name them all."
