HEBING RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE FOLLOWING A TWO YEAR ABSENCE

Bill Hebing has been off trying other venues and it had been two years since he had visited the Spencer Speedway victory lane driving a NASCAR Weekly Modified. Last Friday Hebing broke the winless streak and took home his first Weekly Modified victory since July 2006.

“I got a little worried near the end,” stated Hebing. “I was getting real tight in the center of the turns and then I realized Buck (Catalano) was right behind me,” Hebing added, “I am real pleased with the motor. We have Ed McGuire’s motor in the car tonight”

Jim Steffenhagen Jr. made it three for three in the Street Stock division taking the 20-lap victory. In the Auto Value Scorpions it was Ed die Hawkins making it two wins in a row at Spencer. Hawkins was just able to slip by Bill VerWys, as the two leaders were in heavy lap traffic coming off the fourth turn.

In the Super Sixes it was Keith Butler Jr. taking the win, the third different Super Six feature winner this year. The Cup Lites were also on hand with Scott Wylie, from Blasdell , NY , picking up that series initial win of the 2009 season. Wylie’s best Spencer finish before this was a third.

The 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified 35-lap feature got off to a slow start when Daryl Lewis was sent spinning into the infield grass exiting the second turn. Once under way it was Hebing grabbing the lead from his pole starting position. Kevin Timmerman tagged onto Hebing’s rear bumper with Phil Wehrheim in third.

On lap five, Chris Finocchario took to the outside line and passed Wehrheim for third. He was followed through the hole by Buck Catalano. Also on the move, taking fifth, was Tony Hanbury. Hanbury then worked by Catalano on lap 17 to take fourth.

The yellow flew on lap 19 when Wehrheim looped out in the fourth turn. This allowed the field to pull up onto Hebing’s rear. Hebing lost his five car advantage on Timmerman.

It only took three more laps and the yellow flag was out again when Hanbury and Finocchario came together entering the third turn, sending both cars spinning. Collected in the melee was Any Jankowiak, who hopped a wheel and flew off the track into the grass. This moved Catalano up to third followed by Amy Catalano and Eric h Stritzel in fifth.

The restart saw Catalano go side-by-side with Timmerman for second. A yellow flag for a spin on the back stretch slowed that action. But when the green flew again, lap 29, Catalano made his move stick and grabbed the runner up position.

The yellow flew one last time on lap 33, when Dan Scott spun into the infield grass off the second turn. Timmerman made a charge on Catalano and retook the second spot, with just two laps remaining in the race. With just one lap remaining, Hanbury looped into the front stretch infield. He slowly returned to the track as the race was yellow-checkered.

Hebing took the victory followed by Timmerman, Catalano, Amy Catalano and Ryan Beeman. Beeman, who had crashed and had to be towed in his heat, persevered and by finishing fifth took over the NASCAR Weekly Modified track points lead.

The 20-lap Street Stock main would go green-to-checkers. Only two different leaders were recorded during this event. Steve Malin had his Ford powered car in first for three laps before Steffenhagen Jr. took the point.. Phil Alhart Jr. stayed glued to Steffenhagen’s rear bumper for remainder of the 20-lap affair.

At the finish line it was Steffenhagen Jr. with his third divisional victory followed by Alhart Jr., Steve Malin, Mitchell Wright and Billy Semmler.

“That actually four in a row, as I picked up the last race of the year last season,” stated Steffenhagen Jr. “Malin is a class act, there is no one better to race,” referring to the pass he made on him early in the race for the lead.

The Cup Lites were on hand for their season opening race. A number of cars were not able to make the first race of the season, so Cup Lite officials shortened their race to just 30-laps.

At the green it was Jason Keen blasting into the lead and stretching out a five car advantage over Gary Walker and Wylie, who battled side-by-side for second. Lap eight saw a shake up in the running order as Wylie settled into second and Jeff Moorehouse tried to take third from Walker . It would take Moorehouse five more laps to complete his pass for position.

In the mean time, Wylie caught Keen and passed him for the lead on lap 12. The running order would remain pretty much the same for the final laps, with the exception of Moorehouse who was constantly challenging for position. On the final lap Moorehouse pulled to the inside of Keen down the back stretch and was able to take second from him at the finish line. Dan Tybor and Walker rounded out the top five finishers.

The Super Six main would run green-to-checkers. Keith Butler Jr. took the lead from his father on the second lap and never looked back. The real battle was for second between Skip Powers and Ryan Hillegeer. Hillegeer was able to make a move, with just two laps remaining for the spot. But on the final lap Powers took second back, a full half lap behind Butler Jr.. Hillegeer, Butler Sr. and Joe Bailey rounded out the top five finishers.

“I got this car to handle,” stated Butler Jr. “It’s too bad we lost our hood last week. Butler Jr. added when asked about his uncle Craig, “I’m over at uncle Craig’s helping him weekly.” When it was pointed out that Craig dropped out of the race, Butler Jr. responded, “I guess I’ll be over there more this week.”

Alison Knoepfler led the first lap of the Auto Value Scorpion race, only to drop back to fourth. On lap two it would be Hawkins taking the lead. He would find himself in a battle with Bill VerWys, with VerWys taking the lead on lap four. Hawkins would battle back and with just three laps remaining grab the lead back with an inside move on the backstretch. At the wire it would be Hawkins with his second straight feature win followed by VerWys, Mike Bradshaw, Knoepfler and Ryan Brown.
