Myers Takes Pole and Victory, Jonathan Brown Claims Second Win at Bowman Gray
Both competitors hope that Saturday is the taste of better things to come.

Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium perhaps hinted at some changes to come in the complexion of the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series.
At a track where qualifying is often so crucial, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove had been disappointed with his performance in time trials this season. But the #1 car of Myers turned the fastest lap tonight – the first time Myers has qualified on the pole this season.
“We have really been working on this car. We have been really struggling in qualifying this year,” said Myers. “I think last week we were 11th, but we are on the pole tonight.”
Starting to the outside of Myers was Defending Champion Tim Brown of Cana, Va. When the green flag dropped, the two battled side-by-side, but it was Myers who emerged in the lead.
Brown gave a few strong taps to the rear of Myers, but the #1 car led the way to take the checkered flag. The victory was Myers’ second win of the season, but Myers hopes that his new qualifying success will lead him to many more.
Brown finished behind Myers in second, with veteran Robert Jeffreys of Winston-Salem taking third place.
The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem to the pole with teammate Junior Miller of Danbury to the outside front row. Although the two cars operate in the same garage with the same crew, no quarter was given as the two fought to take the lead.
Miller persisted for two laps on the outside lane until he eventually claimed the lead. It appeared then that it would be smooth sailing for Miller.
The situation changed during a restart, when NASCAR Officials felt that Miller had jumped the start instead of slamming the gas at the proper time. Miller was black-flagged and removed from the lead, moving Jonathan Brown to the head of the pack.
Jonathan Brown had to defend his lead vigorously against some stout bumps from Lee Jeffreys of High Point, but the #53 car was able to stay in front of Jeffreys to take the victory in the second 25-lapper of the night.
It was just last week that Brown took the checkered for the first time ever in a Modified car. And after finally making his way to Winner’s Circle, Brown turns around and does the same thing this week. “Last week everybody said since we got the first one, it all would come a lot easier. I wasn’t expecting it to be the next week,” said Brown.
Lee Jeffreys claimed second with Randy Butner of Pfafftown finishing in third.

In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Kenny Bost of Kernersville won the first 20-lap race, with Scott Hall of Walkertown finishing in second and Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem taking third.
Gary Ledbetter of Lexington took the checkered in the second 20-lapper. Derek Stoltz of Walkertown and Jeff Garrison of Winston-Salem finished in second and third.

After finishing in last place last week, Doug Wall of Pfafftown returned this week to draw the pole as his starting position in the 20-lap race for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Wall was leading the race until John McNeal of Winston-Salem rammed the rear bumper of Wall, causing Wall to spin.
McNeal was sent to the rear of the field for the aggressive move, and Joseph “Bobo” Brown assumed the lead. Joseph, the brother of Jonathan Brown from the Modified Division, went on to claim the checkered.
However, post-race technical inspection revealed that Brown’s motor exceeded the legal size, and Brown was stripped of the win. Matt Cotner of Rural Hall, who finished right behind Brown, was declared the winner.
David Sumner of Trinity and Richard Reeves of Cooleemee finished in second and third.

Saturday was the Craftsman Stadium Stock 50 for the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, the longest and most prestigious race of the season for the Stadium Stock cars. Dale Barneycastle of Mocksville battled through the field to take the checkered in the 50-lapper. Johnny Burke of Midway finished in second, with Jimmy Absher of Rural Hall finishing in third.
