Seems like this message board has been quiet since the reunion? I had a great time on Saturday and enjoyed talking to people I have'nt seen in a while. It was like old times with all the people that were there having a good time along with some great racing!

That is Gus Lewis in his Late Model back in 1979. He took the New Evergreen Speedway Late Model title with that year. What, in the world, is he doing running it with the Modifieds? I would assume that is Terry Markovic in the #92 Modified.

Looking at those massive old bleachers on the hillside reminds me of the 1979 CAM 2 Race Of Champions qualifier at Evergreen. Those stands were so packed, that night, that 5 of us had a hard time finding seats together. My, how things have changed.

Here's something a little different.

This picture, of Richie Jensen's #67 Late Model was taken on Sept 11, 1981 at The New Evergreen Speedway. Bugsy Spencer held a special Modified/Late Model combination race. The Late Models were allowed to remove their fenders for this show so Richie made a one off hood that worked without the fenders. You would think that a Late Model wouldn't stand up very well to the full blown Modifieds of Tony Hirschman, Tony Siscone, Gus Lewis, Magee Miller and Johnny Crawford Jr. but this was Richie Jensen. He wound up winning that race with his Late Model.:applause:

The thing about Richie is that along with being a great driver he's always been a great craftsman. Quite the machinist!

I still say Richie was the absolute best that ever came out of this track. He built his first Late Model in 79 and took the 80 title with 11 wins. He then built his second Late Model, that you see in this last photo, and won the 81 title also with 11 wins. In 82 he home built a Modified of his own design. He won 5 times that year including an open comp race. Tony Siscone came in second to Richie that day driving #14 "Big Red". After New Evergreen closed he won something like 7 Late Model championships down on the 1/2 mile dirt of Selinsgrove Speedway.

He even brought that 410 alcohol burning dirt Late Model to Evergreen in 89, put slicks on it, and lapped the field in the Late Model/Street Stock Shootout.

Hey White Lightnin, I'm surprised that you only named one of the drivers in the last photo. The black #9 is none other than Barefoot Bob McCreadie! He made that dirt car work well against the more sleek Troyer cars back then, and actually had the points lead for a brief time.

Your picture was a little fuzzy, I'm a little fuzzy and I was thinking it was a #7 car so I went blank on you :)

Do you remember the white #1 Price Brothers Special that McCreedie brought to the ROC qualifier later in that 1980 season? What a weapon that was. Won 2 features in one night.

micro60t
06-17-2009, 09:17 AM
Here is a picture of that car that I got out of the 1980 ROC program book from Pocono. I remember that car very well. If my memory is correct, McCreadie won a make up feature from a rainout race and then won the 50 lap CAM2 ROC qualifier that same night! :applause:

White Lightnin
06-17-2009, 10:35 AM
The ROC race started the week before and rained out after a few laps so they continued the race from the lap that it was postponed. MCreedie had originally started in the back of this 50 lapper and ran through the field to take the lead. While leading he tangled with a lapped car and had to restart in the back once again. He passed every car, once again, and retook the lead to win the qualifier. The 50 lapper was one of Bugsy's open comp races so the bigger motors could come in so the normal Small Block Modified rules were not enforced. McCreedie had to make his car Evergreen legal to race the regular nightly points feature. I know he had to put some floorboards in it. He used a highway sign to make it legal. He started in the rear of that one also, due to handicapping, and came out on top of that race too. I remember that he brought his *9 dirt car in as a back up car. His little ground hugger #1 pavement car never came back, after those races, and neither did McCreedie

White Lightnin
06-17-2009, 10:58 AM
Just noticed something in the victory lane photo. McCreedie's air cleaner is gone. The car he tangled with, that caused him to go to the rear of the field, was the Hilbert #45 coupe of Freddy Hamm. Hamm's car went over the top of McCreedie's car tearing off his air cleaner.

#5 Butchie Balliet in the Wilber Shuman entry - I believe they ran this on the dirt at Big Diamond too.

#777 John "Peepers" Yerger in the Shamrock Special - Peepers was the 1979 Small Block Modified Champion in this car at Evergreen. Anyone remember the car that replaced this one? A crazy looking Camaro Modified with an automatic transmission.

In 1980, the Troyer brigade came to town and that was the end of the straight front axle Modified era.

OK this could go 1 of 2 ways. I started going to the track in 1979 and the #28, that I remember from that year, was the Whales Pinto of Tony Siscone. This is not it but could be an earlier version.

The only other "guess" would be the #28 of Ralph Broschard

I'll have to check with some of the Jersey boys that I talk to from Wall. I'm sure that they would know. I do know that in 1979, while Tony Siscone had some feature wins driving the Whales #28 Pinto, Ralph Broschard also won earlier that year in his own #28 car.

First of all, I remember watching your ol' purple No. 60 race at Mahoning in '87. What I don't remember is who bought it.

I think that's Richie Byrne in the 09. At least that's my best guess. That's the Street Stock Racing Club, a group of New Jersey drivers who started out racing on the old New Egypt asphalt and hit Evergreen a few times in '88 and '89, if my memory serves me well. I mostly remember Brian Pancoast's No. 44 from that group.

Kyle, does Richie O'Byrne sound better? I remember the SSRC coming in to Evergreen. New Egypt shut down and they no longer had a place to race their CAM 2 ROC Quailfier so Evergreen gave them a place to run that race up to 1992. I also remember Brian Pancoast but the one that really sticks in my mind was either Pride or Shannon Connor driving the #43 Monte Carlo. That was a car they bought off of Tony Sylvester and it was one of the Tiger Lee cars that ran so well at Pocono. When it ran Pocono. it was a #38 and painted with tiger stripes all over it.

White Lightnin
07-03-2009, 11:12 AM
Here's a little story about one of the SSRC races at Evergreen. For the race in 1992, the SSRC only brought in a handful of cars so Evergreen didn't want the race to look "bad" so they invited the Evergreen SS's to race with them. I was with Dean Kline, at the time and we were told that we didn't have to change a thing on our cars to run this race. The problem here, was that the cars of the SSRC were built closer to a Factory Stock spec and here we were, with 10 inch rubber, 180 headers, jacker bolts, 4 inches off the ground and a ton more differences. We were told that if one of the Evergreen cars won, we would, of course, get the spot at Pocono. They lined up the Evergreen cars at the rear of the field and the race began. Well it didn't take long for the Evergreen SS cars to head to the front. Now what was the track to do? A SSRC car was no way going to win their own qualifier. Dean had the #22 out in front but had a tire going down and spun. Caution comes out and he heads to the pits. We get the tire changed within 2 laps and he joins the rear of the field. Once again he runs through the field and takes the lead. Another caution came out and on the restart, Dean gets put to the rear. HUH?? Upon questioning the call, we were told "didn't we tell you that the cautions counted? Dean lost 2 laps in the pits changing that tire". We told them that "Well, if that was the case, then Dean made up 1 of the laps, right"? The said "well no, he really has to lap the field twice but totally under green with no cautions".:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: We pulled into the pits and loaded up and went home. POLITICS :applause:

Our own track qualifiers, when they had qualifier races, to the ROC were:

1991 #28K Charlie Klatt
1992 #21 Jerry Hildebrand

Ya got me on #1, but #2 is Pete Nensteil's car. Correct? What's the answer to #1?:)

Not Nensteil's either.

Dale's Uncle Carl ran the #32 Late Models back in the Spencer era. The last Late Model that Carl had was Richie Jensen's 1980 championship car. After Evergreen closed in 1982, Dale ran this car in the mid 80's as a #32 Limited Late Model on the dirt at Selingsgrove Speedway. It had a wedge body on it and it was called the "Wiffleball". When Evergreen reopened in 88, Dale put the stock appearing Jensen Camaro body back on it, painted it yellow, and brought it on opening day as a #3 Street Stock. Well, we didn't have much of a tech department back then but a blind man could see that there were no stock Camaros with 2 x 3 frame rails and 4 coil springs. It ran like a raped ape but Dale was told to take it home and leave it home. Uncle Carl's original Late Model, that he started with back in 1979, was a 1968 Chevelle and it was left to sink into the ground after he bought Richie's Camaro. During the week, Dale yanked that old orange and white #32 Chevelle out of the earth and converted it backwards to SS specs and ran the rest of the year with it. The only race he won with the Chevelle was the ROC qualifier. During the 88 season he had built a new maroon Chevelle for the 89 season and that was the one that he took to Pocono. That may be the Chevelle that Bob Nensteil wound up with.

I believe that was Richie Burns driving the 09 a few posts back. I enjoyed the stories about the NJ Street Stockers Racing Club. I was a member and had just built my car for New Egypt Speedway when it closed, that's how I wound up at Evergreen in 88. Funny, the first month or so I was out to lunch with 8" non-offset wheels, stock street tires, and exhaust manifolds. In fact I spun multiple times in the opening day feature trying so hard to keep up! Changing the wheels and tires made a big difference but when I finally put headers on, I really got in the mix. Couldn't believe how much more power I had. Anyway, believe it or not I was the NJ SSRC Traveling Champion in 1988 because of my weekly competition at Evergreen. I never raced with the club guys though because my car no longer matched their rules!

I believe I finished second to Dale Fey when he won that Pocono Qualifier in 88 and we waged one heck of a side by side battle until my right front shock mount broke off and I couldn't run the outside anymore. Absolutely the funnest race I can remember! Wasn't Dale's uncle the turn 2 (track entrance) corner worker back in 1988?

Not Dale's uncle. Carl Fey had health problems and had moved to Florida. He passed away quite a few years ago. He is buried in Mountaintop and his grave has a beautiful black marker with a photo of him racing his Camaro etched into it.

1991 SSRC winner. I wasn't there but if it was a red #61, I'm thinking it may have been Greg Gastelu?

I believe that you're right, Tommy. It was a red #61 car. A first generation Monte Carlo, I think.

The Gastelu's were known for mopars but I believe Greg's car at that time was actually a Chevelle, 72 or 73 vintage perhaps. Been trying to find a picture of it but can't.

Mike Uhrin (Spelling?)

The #84 of Mike Uhrin. Spelling is correct, Frank.

Just to give a little history on this car. Mike had Tony Hirschman in this car for opening day in 1988. Mike took over after that and had 6 wins and was second in points. I don't believe Mike ran here in 1989 so for the 1990 season, Mike sold the car to then new modified team owner Barry Davis. I knew Barry from doing work on his company trucks. During a 4th of July car show in Mountaintop, I introduced Barry to Dean Kline. They got talking and the next thing you knew, we were picking up the modified from Freeland one night. The car was then painted blue and re-numbered 22. Dean had a bad opening day wreck which called for a trip to Rochester to get both front and rear clips replaced. Barry wound up shell shocked and bailed as a owner. Dean worked for Denny Wengrzynek at the time so Denny, all of a sudden, found himself as a car owner. Dean finished the season out in the car and then Denny drove the car himself as a black and silver #52 in 1992-93. It then became a gold colored #44, driven by Howard Johnston, after Denny purchased the ex Doug Hoffman Coors Gold #60 mod for himself. It may have wound up as one of Tom Wanick's cars after that. I lost track.

Moe Roushey, Gerry's uncle, owned the #35 that Hildebrand drove. I believe Gerry is still in Florida.

The yellow/white car, also in the photo, is the #09 Ford Torino driven by Reed Witner.

It looks real familiar to me but I just can't make out the door number. The car, that I'm thinking of was a #52 car. Maybe Greg Edelman?

Now that's a good one - Owned by Quailty Metals out of Dallas, Pa. and driven by Brett Bodine.

I remember the night that Bodine spun coming out of turn 2 and came to a stop with his nose pointing at the wall. Butch Balliett, driving Wilbur Shuman's #5 kept coming, through the cloud of dust, and ran right over the nose of the #4, taking off the air cleaner, hood and carb.

Definitely Paul Bauscher on the outside. I'm going to guess either Marvin Shiner or Barry Rhode on the inside.

Most definitely the "Flying Turkey Farmer" in the #91. Paul's car always looked like, if you gave it enough runway, it would take flight. LOL!!

On the inside is Marvin Shiner Jr. in his #99

These were both old straight front axle Dorney/Mahoning cars running against a field made up mostly of new Troyer pavement Cavaliers. Even though Bauscher was always super fast, he just couldn't get to victory lane with this car. Shiner did win 1 feature in this #99 car. Maybe the last straight axle win at Evergreen ever.

It is possible. Maybe you could find a full side shot of Shiner or Wuchter in your old Mahoning Valley programs? That would help ID it once and for all. :)

It is Marvin Shiner on the inside. Here is a picture of him from the same year (1988) at the Linda's Speedway.

These straight front axle cars looked a little out of place at Evergreen running against the Troyers, Bo-Dyns and the Dolins but it sure looks good on the dirt.

Great picture :applause:
