A lucky draw gives Myers a second chance at victory.

Sometimes a racer’s night can be decided with one slightly wrong guess or one minor mistake. And with a field as competitive as the Farm Bureau Insurance Modified Series, no track is as unforgiving as Bowman Gray Stadium.

On Saturday, Defending Champion Tim Brown of Cana, VA made all the right decisions to start off his night. For the first time in 2009, Brown turned the fastest qualifying lap – placing him on the pole for the start of the first race.

Brown battled with Randy Butner of Pfafftown as the green flag fell, but Brown eventually secured the lead. The #83 led the rest of the way to take the checkered. Randy Butner finished in second, with Michael Clifton of Walkertown claiming third.

In stark contrast to Brown, Burt Myers of Walnut Cove had a disappointing start in the event. Myers qualified 12th and finished 12th in the first race. “We were pretty sick after qualifying and then after the first race,” said Myers.

Minor miscalculations on car setup had left Myers with a middle of the pack car. “The car was so bad the first race that I was already telling them what we needed to do to the car for the second race,” said Myers.

In a stroke of good luck, Tim Brown drew 12 as the number for the “Madhouse Scramble” – putting Brown at 12th for the start of the second race and Myers on the pole.

With the adrenaline pumping at the thought of getting a second chance, Myers’ crew worked feverishly on the car. Their efforts paid off, and Myers led from start to finish in the second race in commanding fashion, taking the checkered for the third time this season.

Brad Robbins of Winston-Salem and Chris Fleming of Mount Airy finished in second and third.

In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Saturday night resembled an endurance race. Perhaps it was the summer heat combined with the extra demands of a 60-lapper instead of the normal 20-lap race – but cars seemed to break left and right. Flat tires, blown engines, and twisted sheet metal abounded.

In 60 laps, there were a total of 13 cautions, making the competition an incredibly grueling one – especially for Derek Stoltz of Walkertown. With the double-file restart rule in effect, Stoltz had to fight off challenges from the outside over a dozen times.

David Adams of Yadkinville, Barry Edwards of Pinnacle, Gary Ledbetter of Lexington, Kenny Bost of Kernersville, Kyle Edwards of King, Ronnie Clifton of Walkertown, Robbie Brewer of Winston-Salem, and Chris Fleming of Mount Airy all tried their hand at challenging Stoltz on the outside.

But Stoltz held on each and every time to bring home the win. Gary Ledbetter finished behind Stoltz in second, and Kenny Bost took third.

Joseph “Bobo” Brown of Winston-Salem claimed the victory in the 20-lapper for the 104.1 WTQR Street Stock Series. Reggie Doub of Germanton and David Sumner of Trinity finished in second and third.

In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Kevin L. Neal of Walkertown took the checkered in the first race – his first victory this season. In the second 15-lapper, Chris Lawing of King claimed the win. The victory was Lawing’s first time ever in Winner’s Circle.

As part of an annual tradition to honor our nation, Bowman Gray Stadium will not hold any racing events this Saturday, July 4. But racing will return with a vengeance the following week on July 11 with Farm Bureau Insurance One Dollar Ladies’ Night and the Farm Bureau Insurance 100.
