AMY CATALANO WINS HER FIRST WEEKLY MODIFIED FEATURE, FINOCCHARIO TAKES THE SECOND 35-LAPPER

A full night of racing under somewhat cool conditions saw Amy Catalano win her first ever open wheel NASCAR Weekly Modified feature in the curfew delayed feature from June 19.

With double points on the line, Chris Finocchario won his fifth NASCAR Weekly Modified 35-lap main, breaking a winless streak dating back to June 22, 2007 .

In Street Stock action Jim Steffenhagen Jr. remains undefeated on the season, while Ed die Hawkins picked up yet another win in the Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpion division. Kevin DeVuyst replaced Skip Powers behind the wheel of the potent number 41 Super Six machine to take his second feature win on the season.

The evening started off with the curfew delayed 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified feature. Eric h Stritzel and Ricky Kluth paced the field down to take the green. Kluth was able to jump into the lead, however the yellow flew following a spin in the first turn. A number of cars did not react to the yellow fast enough, resulting in a multi-car tangle in the third turn. In this accident Daryl Lewis Jr. ended up on the front end of the Matt Lee’s car.

The restart saw another yellow. After the initial yellows, Kluth darted into the led followed by Amy Catalano, Tony Hanbury and Ryan Beeman. On lap six the yellow flew when Phil Wehrheim looped around in between the third and fourth turns. During this yellow Buck Catalano was sent pit side for leaking fluids on the track. Buck returned to the back of the field for the restart.

A six lap green lap period followed with Kluth holding off Amy Catalano. On lap 14, Paul Jeffers looped out on the back stretch to end the green lap run. Jeffers’s luck didn’t get any better as he crashed into the backstretch wall, lap 26, ending his night on the back of a tow truck.

The final few laps of the feature saw Kluth trying his best to hold off Amy. Amy did her best, going high exiting the fourth turn and out dragging Kluth to the finish line, winning by less then a car length. In just her fifth start in the open wheel NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Amy found victory lane. Kluth, Tony Hanbury, Kevin Timmerman and Ryan Beeman filled out the top five finishers.

The second 35-lap, double point, race saw Andy Lewis take the lead followed by Daryl Lewis Jr., Chris Finocchario and Matt Lees. On lap three, Tony Hanbury pulled to a halt on the back stretch just as he exited the second turn. Hanbury’s car had lost power, ending his race in the pits.

Finocchario was able to grab second and chase down Andy Lewis, passing Lewis for the lead on lap nine. On lap 17 the yellow flew when Fred Taylor spun out between the first and second turn.

Finocchario maintained his advantage with Ryan Beeman now running in second, followed by Kevin Timmerman and Amy Catalano. Lap 21, saw yet another yellow when Any Lewis went around between turns three and four.

Finocchario was able to hang on for his first win of the year. Beeman, Timmerman, Amy Catalano and Ricky Kluth rounded out the top five.

“It’s a real thrill to win this double point race,” commented Finocchario in victory lane.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw Jim Steffenhagen Jr., in his crate powered Chevrolet, remain undefeated on the season winning his sixth feature in six starts. Steffenhagen Jr. took command of the race on lap four from Kris Hillegeer. He was followed through the hole he created by Phil Alhart Jr. moving into second.

The race would run green-to-checkers, with Steffenhagen Jr. taking the win. Alhart Jr., Hillegeer, Mitchell Wright and Billy Semmler completed the top five finishers.

“This crate motor costs half as much and will last three times longer,” sated an elated Steffenhagen Jr. in victory lane.

The Super Six feature saw Patti Davenport take the early lead followed by Kevin DeVuyst. In a rare happening I this class, the yellow fly on lap five when fifth place runner Joe Bailey made contact with fourth place Ryan Hillegeer resulting a spinout in the third turn.

The restart saw DeVuyst take the lead from Davenport . On lap eight the 20 of Fred Follette limped to a stop with a flat tire. By now Keith Butler Jr. had worked into second and tried to challenge DeVuyst for the lead. DeVuyst held off all challenges and won going away. Butler Jr., Davenport , Hillegeer, and Keith Butler Sr. rounded out the top five finishers.

The Four Cylinder Auto Value Scorpions saw Ed die Hawkins pick up his fifth feature win of the season. Hawkins had to work hard for this victory as there were five lead changes throughout the 15-lap main event. Hawkins finally took command of the win passing Mike Bradshaw on lap nine.

Cautions slowed the event twice. On lap 11, Bro Bradshaw looped his car on the backstretch and on lap 13, Alison Knoepfler spun in the fourth turn and Chris Priest made contact with her, ending both of the night’s racing.

Hawkins took the win followed by Bill VerWys, Otis Bradshaw, Ryan Brown and Russell Peets.

“This car just hooked up tonight,” stated Hawkins. Hawkins stepped back from the open wheel modified racing due to the economy, but remained active building a fast Auto Value Scorpion.
