CHRIS PERLEY, NOKIE FORNORO, & NORM WRENN SCORE CARQUEST EXTREME TUESDAY FEATURE WINS AT STAFFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Tuesday night, July 7th, was the 6th annual CARQUEST Extreme Tuesday program at Stafford Motor Speedway. Chris Perley won the 50-lap ISMA Supermodified feature for the second consecutive year at Stafford, Nokie Fornoro won the 30-lap NEMA Midget feature event, and Norm Wrenn made it two in a row at Stafford by taking the 25-lap Pro-4 Modified feature event.
In the 50-lap ISMA Supermodified feature event, Vern Romanoski took the early lead with Dave McKnight, Mike Lichty, Eric Lewis, and Chris Perley making up the top-5. Romanoski held the lead until lap-12 when McKnight went by Romanoski on the outside as they encountered lapped traffic. Perley was also putting the outside groove to use, as he moved into second on lap-18 and he then took the lead from McKnight on lap-19 with both moves coming by virtue of using the outside groove. Lichty also moved by McKnight to take over second and Lichty was glued to the back bumper of Perley as the two cars navigated lapped traffic. Once the top duo was cleared of the lapped cars, Perley was able to pull Lichty by several car lengths. Lichty’s great run ended on lap-35 as he pulled off the track with mechanical problems. A caution with 40-laps complete slowed the action and bunched the field up for a restart. Perley was up to the task as he had been all night long as he pulled away from the field once again. But another spin brought the yellow flag back out with 43 laps complete. McKnight retired under the caution, which put Bentley Warren into second and Russ Wood into third place for the restart. But just as he had done all night since taking the lead for the first time on lap-19, Perley again drove away from the field. The race was shown the yellow/checkered flag when the cars of Dave Trytek and Jeff Abold got stuck together coming off the fourth turn with 46 laps complete, making Perley the winner for the second consecutive year at Stafford. Bentley Warren finished second, with Wood, Mark Sammut, and Mike Ordway, Jr. rounding out the top 5.
In the 30-lap NEMA Midget feature event, Adam Cantor quickly put himself out front ahead of Nokie Fornoro, Paul Luggelle, Randy Cabral, and Russ Stoehr. Cantor was setting a blistering pace out front, while Cabral was working Luggelle over for third place. Cabral was able to take the position from Luggelle on lap-11 and he set his sights on running down the top-2 cars. The leaders began to encounter lapped traffic and Fornoro moved by Cantor to take over the race lead on lap-16. Cabral moved by Cantor for second on lap-22 and he began to close in on Fornoro. Cabral was able to get close to Fornoro, but he was not able to overtake him as Fornoro took his third career NEMA feature victory at Stafford. Fornoro has now won at Stafford in 1981, 2004, and 2009. Rounding out the top-5 behind Fornoro and Cabral was Cantor, Greg Stoehr, and Jeff Horn.
In the 25-lap Pro-4 Modified feature took the green with Brian Vincent powering to the outside of George Sherman to take the early race lead. Cory Cleary was tight to Sherman’s bumper in third place, with Rob Richardi, Jr. and Phil Lausier making up the top-5. Cleary got by Sherman for second place on a lap-8 restart while Vincent continued to hold the race lead. Wrenn also moved by Sherman to take third, dropping Sherman from second back to fourth place. The race complexion changed on a lap-15 restart that saw contact between Vincent and Cleary at the front of the field that left Cleary with a flat tire. Wrenn powered by Vincent on the restart and took the lead for the first time. Wrenn pulled away from Vincent, but over the final 5 laps Vincent began to reel Wrenn back in. Vincent would run out of time as Wrenn took the checkered flag several car lengths ahead of Vincent for his second consecutive win at Stafford. Rounding out the top-5 was Matt Sagar, Richardi, and Lausier.
