BUCK CATALANO WINS HIS FIRST OF THE YEAR, STEFFEHAGEN JR. MAKES IT SEVEN IN A ROW

The rains fell on Saturday, July 11, forcing Spencer and NASCAR officials to cancel for the evening and rescheduling their biggest race of the year to Sunday, July 12 starting at noon.

Eric k Rudolph picked up his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour feature. More on this race can be found in a special NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour article.

On the local level it was Buck Catalano taking his first NASCAR Weekly Modified feature win of the season. That was career win number 49 in the Weekly Modified division at Spencer. Jim Steffenhagen Jr, driving his crate powered Chevrolet, took his seventh straight Street Stock feature in a row. He remains unbeaten on the year. In the Super Sixes, Kevin DeVuyst won his second straight feature, third of the year.

The Super Six 20-lap feature saw outside pole sitter Joe Bailey take the early lead followed by Rick Wilson and Kevin DeVuyst. On lap seven, DeVuyst powered into the lead. Patti Davenport also broke free and took up the chase on DeVuyst, but she ran out of time, as the event went green-to-checkers. DeVuyst took the victory, with Davenport finishing second. Ryan Hillegeer made a last lap pass to capture third. Keith Butler Jr. and Peter Cowell rounded out the top five finishers.

Only five cars answered the call in the Street Stock feature, which was shortened to 15 laps. Kris Hillegeer went into the record books as leading the first lap. However it would Jim Steffenhagen Jr. from that point on. Phil Alhart, Jr., Kris Hillegeer, Billy Semmler and Mitchell Wright cross the finish line to make up the top five finishers.

The NASCAR Weekly Modifieds took to the track, twenty-two cars strong. Matt Lees battled off Eric h Stritzel for the lead. Daryl Lewis Jr. moved into second when the first yellow flew on lap four when Chris Finocchario and Andy Jankowiak looped around in the second turn.

Lewis Jr. grabbed the lead on the restart, only to lose out to Ryan Beeman on lap six. Racing was fast and furious. Back in the pack Amy Catalano and Ricky Kluth touched on lap six, resulting in Bill Hebing spinning in the second turn.

Up front Beeman gave way to Buck Catalano on lap 11. On lap 12 Jody London and Stritzel slid off the track in the second turn and into the tire barrier.

Up front Kluth had moved in behind Buck Catalano. Following a number of spinouts, the race was able to go green for the final thirteen laps. The best battle was between Amy Catalano and Kluth for second. Kluth was able to hold her off and claim second. Finocharrio and Kevin Timmerman rounded out the top five finishers.

This coming Friday the NORA 360 Supermodifieds return to action at Spencer. They will be joining a full program of NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Street Stocks, Super Sixes and the return of the Auto Value Scorpions after a week off. The Super Six division will have double points available to them for the second time in 2009.

This will be the second and final appearance of the Supermodifieds at Spencer in 2009. Back on June 19, Dave Gruel led Dave Cliff to the finish line. Rob Pullen, Jason Simmons and Barry Kingsley rounded out the top five in that race. Race time remains 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
