Looks like Paul Koehler Sr. in the 6. Is that Frank Scotto ahead in the 00? Wish I had some old pics...all of mine are in programs.

I'm not sure who is in the Pinto on the right? However, the #6 coupe is Tony Zastko in the former Koehler car.

Recently, I was buying some parts for my street car from a guy in Lehighton that runs a #20 Late Model at Mahoning (Mike Van Fossen) when Tony Zastko walked in the garage. We spent another hour talking old racing stories from both tracks. Man, does he have the stories to tell  Totally enjoyable to talk to. I liked his tales of his AMC days the best.

I saw the number 2 but didn't think of Daryl Amey only because all of the pictures of his 2A, that I have seen, have been white. This photo would have to be from 77 or 78. I didn't start going to New Evergreen until the ROC qualifier in 1979 and this photo is older than that.

Normally, he came in with his brown #71 Pinto but on July 24, 1981, Jim Zacharias brought the #07 Vega, that son Rick normally raced, and successfully collected a bounty that was put on the white #85 of Gus Lewis.

Two very good late model drivers in action!

Well, the #85 is driven by Gus Lewis who took this Camaro to the 1979 Late Model championship. The car on the inside looks like an early Chevelle and I'm trying to remember who drove those in the late 70's. The ones that come to mind are #35 John Beltrami, #82 Clete Spade, #42 Tom Zajac Sr. and the #42/88 of Joe Monkowski but this doesn't look like any of them. Seeing the orange #7 on the door, could this be an early version of #71 Don Kepping?

Thinking about where Gus's #85 Camaro wound up after the 79 championship and I believe it was later run as the black #22 by Frank Barbush, the gold and maroon #527 by Nate Hunsinger and then as the red #14 by Eddie Simon. I also though that, somewhere along the years, it became the red #10 that Russ Frantz piloted down at Dorney Park. Wasn't this Camaro one of the older style center steering car?

Anyone Know?

Wow, that's quite a lineage! Paul Frantz could probably let us know if Russ' 10 was Gus Lewis' old car. I remember Ed Simon driving a blue and silver 14 at the Park; not sure if that was the same car or not.

The 14 of Ed Simon was red when it ran Evergreen.

I was waiting for Kyle's response. I'm surprised that being a big Dorney Park fan, he did'nt know that the driver on the outside is Rick Karpeuk in the #87.

kyle06

You're right - that is Karpeuk!

Paul Frantz sent me a note. He also remembers Ed Simon's red 14 from Evergreen (that's a car I don't think I've ever seen). Russ helped build the blue and silver 14 that Ed drove at Dorney.

Paul also offers an interesting fact: The car Russ won Evergreen's 89 title with was the same car that took Tony Hirschman to the '81 Evergreen title!

White Lightnin

I should have remembered Karpeuk. I was only recalling the ones that ran weekly not the ones that showed up from time to time.

I remember that primered 110 when Russ brought it at the end of 1988 as being Tony's last black 60 that he ran at Evergreen in the Spencer era. That was the one that he took to the 1980 championship not 1981. Before Russ ran that car, it also spent some time as a blue #9 owned by Dale Beers. Gus Lewis won the 1981 title with his white #85 Troyer Pinto and, at the 1981 banquet, I was sitting at the head Street Stock table with the Aigledinger #75 car when we looked over at the head Modified table and realized that it was empty. I don't remember the details but the Gus Lewis team had a "problem" with track management (somethings never change) and decided to not show up to get their trophies. Bugsy just moved second place finisher, Johnny Crawford Jr. and his #96 team, up to the head table. Gus Lewis's car also came back in 1988 as that weird bodied #31 of Roger Heffelfinger Jr. I also believe that one of these 2 cars, in the mid 80's, ran Dorney as the #87 of Rick Karpeuk. Maybe Kyle will remember more.

WOW!!! That's a tough one, Dennis. By the looks of passed for guard rails, this was taken in 77 or 78. Since I wasn't going to Evergreen until late 79, I will take the obvious road on this one. It could be the #44 of Rick Post or possibly one of the Spencers in Timmy Maloney's #27. I don't remember Jimmy having a #24 Vega.

White Lightnin
08-03-2009, 08:24 AM
Come to think of it, I believe that Maloney's blue #27 Vega used to be one of Jimmy's cars. I also see a sea of blue shirts in the grand stands. Some standing close to the fence. My best "guess" is #24 Jimmy Spencer. Isn't it amazing the amout of fans back then. This picture shows only a part of the grand stands. You could take just the fans shown in this photo and overflow the aluminum bleachers that are there now. I still remember the ROC quailfier in 79 and not being able to find seating where 5 of us could sit together.

I am not positive about this one myself. It was over 30 years ago and sometimes I do forget. As far as I can remember, I thought it was Ed Spencer Sr. driving the #27 ?

Definitely some of the Spencer fans, wearing blue, heading down towards the fence.

Jeff Jones #22. Does Carl still run CJ's Pizza near the Home Depot in Wilkes-Barre?

Hey Kyle, back a few years before we sold the Crossroads to Dean & Brenda, CJ's Pizza was going to build a high end Italian Restaurant right across the street from the bar. We went to the zoning hearing and the only ones, at that time, involved with the deal was Jeff Jones and his wife. I don't know if that meant that Carl and Jeff split or not. CJ's is still down by the Home Depot but I can't say who is running it now.

The 109 car also raced at Big Diamond. There were three different drivers in the car, but Frank Kunkel drove it there quite often.

And Gus Lewis occasionally ran Diamond. I remember watching a car very similar to that one, I think it is the same car as a matter of fact.

Back in the 70's some drivers would run the same car at New Evergreen Speedway on Friday, Dorney Park Speedway on Saturday and on the dirt of Nazareth Raceway on Sunday.

The car on the inside looks like another one of those Mahoning bodies. I believe it was a #41 car but can't remember the driver's name. Possibly Bub Christman?

The Troyer that Mike Uhrin ran was the same one that we ran as the blue #22that Dean Kline drove. That doesn't look like that car at all. :)
