FINOCCHARIO PICKS UP NASCAR WEEKLY MODIFIED FEATURE NUMBER TWO ON THE SEASON; STEFFENHAGEN STREAK ENDS

Chris Finocchario earned his second modified feature win of the season at Spencer by out lasting early cautions in the 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified main event.

In the Street Stock division, the addition of harder Hoosier tires on the Jim Steffenhagen Jr. Monte Carlo, coupled with the return of Bob Minacapelli, finally ended Steffenhagen’s win streak in the division at seven. Bob Minacapelli picked up where he left off in 2006, in victory lane.

The Cup Lites were on hand with Scott Wylie picking up the 30-lap victory over Dan Tybor and Jeff Moorehouse. It was Wylie’s second straight win of the season in the Cup Lite division at Spencer. This class is scheduled to return one last time this season on August 28.

The Super Sixes saw Keith Butler Jr. pick up feature win number three on the season. In the Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpions the win went to Ed Hawkins, father of regular driver Ed die. Both of these races were double point events for their respective divisions.

At the drop of the green in the NASCAR Weekly Modified feature, pole sitter, Terry Cheetham and outside pole sitter Matt Lees made contact exiting the fourth turn. The end results saw Lees hit the fourth turn wall and Cheetham being sent to the rear for the restart. This left Anthony Jankowiak in the lead.

Jankowiak led Bill Hebing on the restart. On lap five the yellow flew again when Fred Taylor looped around in the fourth turn. A second yellow came out for a bad restart.

Jankowiak maintained his lead over Hebing, however it would be a the yellow flag dominating the action as Cheetham looped around exiting the second turn. The next lap, lap six, saw a multi-car tangle going into turn one. Involved were Toad Bradshaw, Andy Lewis, Eric h Stritzel and Daryl Lewis Jr.. All were able to return to the back of the pack.

The restart saw yet another yellow when Jankowiak spilt high forcing Hebing to bobble. That bobble resulted in Hebing and third place runner Buck Catalano spinning off the fourth turn.

It would be Jankowiak’s turn on the next lap as he and, now second place runner, Ricky Kluth came together and spun off the first turn. This left third place Chris Finocchario in the lead followed by Kevin Timmerman and Amy Catalano.

A yellow on lap 15 stopped a green flag run that started just four laps earlier on lap 11. This time Toad Bradshaw spun between turns three and four.. Sixteen of the 20 started were still running a\on lap 19, when second place runner Kevin Timmerman sailed off the track in the first turn. A possible steering failure was attributed to Timmerman leaving the speedway.

It looked like the final fifteen laps would run under green flag conditions, however a spin, by Mark Cline, on lap 24, slowed the race once more. Finally the race would be completed under green with Finocchario taking the win. Amy Catalano finished second followed by Ryan Beeman, Jeff Price and Buck Catalano returning for a top five finish. The finishes by Buck and Amy Catalano left them first and second in the NASCAR Weekly Modifieds sepearated by a mere two points.

The Cup Lite 30-lap main event saw fifth place starter, Jeremy Ratajczyk shoot through the pack to claim the lead, as the inside lane seemed to advance quicker. Ratajczyk couldn’t maintain his lead, as Scott Wylie soared by him into the lead on the second lap. By lap three the race was taking shape as Dan Tybor took second from Ratajczyk.

On lap six, Mark Hoch moved by Ratajczyk for third. The only incident in the race came on lap 17 when Chris Bosch looped his “Dodge” in the second turn.

Jeff Moorehouse seemed content sitting in fourth until there were just ten laps to go. He swung around Hoch and started to chase down the leaders.

At the finish it would be Wylie followed by Tybor, Moorehouse, Mark Hoch and John Bosch. It was Wylie second win of the year at Spencer.

The start of the 20-lap Street Stock feature spelled problems for Jim Steffenhagen Jr.. The start saw Bill Malin lose power down the front stretch and Steffenhagen turn pit side with a flat right front tire. Steffehangen returned at the back of the field before the race was restarted. He was able to work his way up to third, but lost that position to Kris Hillegeer on lap 11. Up front it was a battle between Phi Alhart Jr., who has six second place finishes so far this year to his credit, and Bob Minacapelli. Minacapelli took the lead on lap nine.

At the finish it would be Minacapelli, winning for the first time since September of 2006, followed by Alhart Jr., for his seventh second place finish of the year. Hillegeer, Steffenhagen Jr. and Mitchell Wright rounded out the top five finishers.

The Super Sixes took to the track with outside pole sitter, Van Grant taking the lead at the drop of the green. A good field of thirteen started the race.

On lap it was Keith Butler Jr., who had started in sixth, taking the lead. One lap later it would be Kevin DeVuyst moving into second. The race would now run green-to-checkers. Butler Jr. held on for the win, pulling away from DeVuyst at the end. Ryan Hillegeer, Patti Davenport and Justin Kaper rounded out the top five.

The Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpions ran their 25-lap special event running green-to-checkers. Earlier leader Alison Knoepfler was passed by Ed Hawkins on lap six. From that point on Hawkins never looked back. A battle for second through fourth was taking shape between Mike Bradshaw, Otis Bradshaw and Bill VerWys.

VerWys secured the second spot on lap 15 but was not able to run down the faster Hawkins. These two finished ahead of Mike Bradshaw, Otis Bradshaw and Ryan Brown.

It has been decided that there will now be a race-within-a-race in the Four Cylinder Scorpion Division. While Ed Hawkins won the Auto Value “Pro” Scorpion Class, young Mike Bradshaw was declared the winner of the Auto Value “Beginner” Scorpion Class.
