HEBING RETURNS TO VICTORY LANE AND DOUBLE POINTS

Bill Hebing returned to victory lane after a two month winless streak ended last Friday, winning the double point 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified feature at Spencer Speedway. Hebing, who began racing in the Weekly Modified division in 2000, upped his career victory total to 44 feature wins at Spencer.

“There was some crashing and smashing early on, but I didn’t see it all,” stated Hebing in victory lane. “What our real aim is to have an RoC car. I expect to have a ride next week during the RoC show here.”

In Street Stock racing Jim Steffenhagen Jr. returned to victory lane, making for his eighth feature win of the 2009 season. Steffenhagen was still using the harder compound rubber required on the crate powered Street Stockers.

Bill VerWys, winner of the Pro division of Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpion 15-lapper had nothing but praise for his co-winner Alison Knoepfler, who took top honors in the Beginner division. Alison a graduate of the Sodus Microd Club, gave a tearful interview thanking her crew and family..

Keith Butler Jr. won his fourth Super Six feature of the season. Butler pulled into victory lane with some crumbled sheet metal.

“That was a good close race between us (Ryan Hillegeer.)”, added Butler in victory lane.

The 35-lap NASCAR Weekly Modified feature saw Andy Lewis power from his pole starting position into the early lead. Outside pole man Eric h Stritzel settled into second followed by Toad Bradshaw and Ricky Kluth.

On lap five Bradshaw had worked his way into position to take the lead, as Lewis dropped back to sixth. One lap later it would Kluth powering by Bradshaw for the lead. The yellow flew on lap seven as Buck Catalano took the lead, and Kluth made contact with the backstretch outside wall ending his night.

The restart saw yet another yellow with Buck Catalano and Bradshaw making contact as they exited the fourth turn. Bradshaw’s night ended on the hook and track officials then sent Catalano to the rear for the restart.

This left Hebing in the lead followed by multi-time feature winner Chris Finocchario and Kevin Timmerman. Buck Catalano again worked his way to the top five and was under Finocchario on lap 17, when the two came together in the second turn. Finocchario spun off the track and Catalano was sent to the back of the field again for the restart.

Up front it was Hebing now leading Timmerman and Amy Catalano. The race remained this way for the final fifteen laps. Buck Catalano worked himself back up to fourth but found himself in serious head-to-head battle with Amy for the remainder of the race. Eric h Stritzel rounded out the top five finishers.

Buck (608) still remains four points ahead of Amy (604) following the double point feature.

In Street Stock action the 20-lap feature saw Mitchell Wright take the lead at the drop of the green. Alhart Jr. grabbed to the lead four laps later, however Alhart’s car blew a tire sending him off the third turn. He collected Wright who ended up hitting the backstretch wall. This put the race under yellow, with Wright pitting and returning to the race at the back of the pack..

All of this action left Jim Steffenhagen Jr. with the lead on the restart. Last week’s feature winner, Bob Minacapelli, tried to remain in second but lost the position to Eric h Strusz on lap seven. The race remained green until the end with Steffenhagen Jr. claiming the win. Strusz finished a close second followed Minacapelli, Hillegeer and Steve Malin in fifth, his first top five finish of the year.

The Super Sixes feature saw Skip Powers make contact with the wall in the third turn causing an early caution. Up front Keith Butler Sr. was in control with Joe Bailey in the runner up spot. On lap seven Bailey lost out in a battle for position with Keith Butler Jr., who then proceeded to pass his father for first one lap later.

Ryan Hillegeer then proceeded to get by the older Butler to take second, then setting his eyes on Butler Jr.

Keith Butler Jr. held on for the victory, his fourth win of the season, followed by Hillegeer and his father Keith Sr. Bailey and Van Grant rounded out the top five finishers.

In Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpion action it would be Keith Bertolone taking the lead from the outside pole starting spot. His lead lasted just one lap before Alison Knoepfler sailed pass him for the front spot. Alison remained up front until lap seven when “Pro” runner Bill VerWys took control of the front spot. The 15-lapper would run green-to-checkers with VerWys taking the win. Alison held on to claim first in the “Beginner” division and second in the finish order of the race. Ryan Brown, Bro Bradshaw and Mike Bradshaw rounded out the top five finishers.

This Friday will see the second and final visit of the RoC Modifieds to Spencer in 2009. Earlier this year they had 35 cars on hand for a 75-lap event won by local runner Mike Leaty. This time around the RoC cars are scheduled for a 100-lapper. Many of the top touring modified drivers are expected to be on hand for this race.

Also on the race card will be the regular foray of NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Street Stocks, Super Sixes and Auto Value Four Cylinder Scorpions. Race time has been moved forward a half hour to 7 p.m. sharp to make room for the busy schedule.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York .
