SPENCER OPENING PRACTICE SESSION DAMP, BUT RUN

Despite rain and strong winds, the season opening “Test & Tune” session did take place last Friday evening at Spencer Speedway.

Rains greeted the racers, starting to fall around 5 p.m. , delaying the start of practice. Following a number of laps around the new pavement at 40 mph, by two trucks, Auto Value Scorpions and Super Sixes, the track dried sufficiently to allow practice to start. However, at 6 p.m. , more rain fell, wetting down the speedway a second time.

The process of drying the speedway began again. A few of the teams left the speedway at this time figuring there was no hope in getting the evening even started. Persistence by the track crew and racers won out. At 6:30 p.m. the call came from the pits that anyone wanting fast laps to get on line.

Three full sessions were able to be run before the track became too dark to continue. The early sessions showed the better times as temperatures dramatically dropped and the northeast winds became stronger. These conditions resulted in slower times then expected on the new surface.

Topping the practice times was Terry Cheetham in his RoC Modified with a speed of 83.830 mph. Buck Catalano was just a tick slower in a Sunoco Fuels Modified with a speed of 83.725 mph.

The racers found a new track, other then the one they had run on before. The new surface offered more grip, allowing many to correct mistakes faster and safer.

“We needed to open up the groves around the track by laying down some rubber,” stated owner John White . “We began that process with what we were able to accomplish tonight. But more laps on the track would be beneficial.”

Thirty race teams were on hand at the track. Due to the deteriorating weather conditions, it was anticipated that a number of them did not venture to the track..

This Friday, May 14, will feature the second “Test & Tune” session of the season. Gates open at 4 p.m. , with the track opening for practice at 5:30 p.m. Practice will continue until dark.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.

All times are unofficial, as transponders were not used. Each record shows - car number, driver, and seconds- Not every car was able to receive a time based on time on the track and length of timing session.
