MOTHER NATURE DELAYS SPENCER OPENER BY ONE WEEK

A large crowd and a fine field of cars were on hand last Friday, May 21, at Spencer Speedway for the 56th annual season opener. Sunny skies throughout the morning would turn cloudy by afternoon. The rain held back until the start of the Sunoco Fuels Modified qualifying heats. As the first heat rounded the final turns the yellow and checkered flags were displayed.

The start of the second heat was scrapped when rains turned heavy. Fans began to take cover as the sprinkles turned to larger drops and rains fell steady. Prior to the rain heat wins went to: Auto Value Scorpions-Otis Bradshaw and Mike Bradshaw, Super Sixes- Patti Davenport and Skip Powers, Street Stocks-Mitchell Wright and the first Sunoco Modified heat to Jeff Hamman.

“We’ll have to pick up this show next week,” stated promoter John White. “We’ll start with the second Sunoco Modified heat and go from there. Rain checks will be honored and race team members will need their wristbands to get back in.”

When asked if he felt the rains, which came from the southwest, may have affected the modified field White responded,” I am sure some of the Holland cars didn’t come because of the rain in their area this afternoon. I expect we may have a few more cars join us this coming week. We will just start them at the rear of the remaining heat races.”

The same will hold true for any new street stock, super six or scorpion car that comes next week. We’ll add them to the back of the feature starting fields.

Friday, May 28 will see the continuation of last Friday’ show at the speedway. The NASCAR Sunoco Fuels Modifieds will do battle in their season opening 100-lapper. They will be joined by the Super Sixes, Street Stocks and Auto Value Scorpions feature races. Race time starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp. Currently there are two Sunoco Fuel Modified heats to be run to fill out the starting field.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester, NY, along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson. Spencer Speedway is the local “NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York. Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
