What happened?

He was hit in the infield by the #91 modified. Somehow it either had the throttle stuck or just lost control. Mike didnt even see it coming. Heard he broke his legs and an arm. Hoping for a speedy recovery. Mike is one of the best officials we have at Riverhead. I hate to think what its going to be like without him at the track, only god knows.

I was asked to pass this message along by Paul Dodorico, to keep everyone updated. I personally would like to extend my wishes for a speedy recovery, as I just found out about what happened.

Mike was transferred from Riverhead/Peconic Bay Hospital to Stony Brook during the night.
He suffered a dislocated shoulder and two broken legs and was still being checked for further injuries. He was being prepared for surgery on his legs during the early morning hours.
Mike was always conscious and was in typical Mike Cappiello good spirits, a little unhappy that he would not be able to golf this coming week. Pat was doing as good as could be expected and is with family at the hospital.

I just spoke to Pat. Mike is doing well, surgery on his left leg was done however they will need to do further surgery in a few days due to some muscle damage. He is otherwise doing well. He is joking around and in good spirits.

I hate to bring it up, but during practice the infield workers were sweeping up speedy dry as we were making laps, I really hope from this point foward all officials are behind the concrete blocks along with photographers, and all infield track workers are in/on the tow trucks! As bad as Mikes injurys are, he is VERY fortunate at the same time!

Just left the hospital. One of the biggest things Mike stressed was exactly what Justin said, everyone on track whether it be officials, track crew, photographers, ect. should be behind those concrete barriers. It was such a freak accident and stinks that something like this has to happen but now hopefully this will prevent anymore on track injuries. Mike considered himself to be very lucky even with how severe his injuries are. He seems to be in good spirits and even was joking around a little bit with me while i was there. Lets all keep him in our thoughts and prayers as he has a LONG road to recovery ahead. He thanks everyone who has called and sent get well wishes.

I just spoke to Pat Cappiello, Mike is doing ok, still in a lot of pain and not getting much sleep. He is scheduled for surgery later today to repair some muscle damage in his leg. He will also be having a skin graft to close up the wound.

Just spoke to Pat, Mike is doing ok but not getting enough rest. They both really appreciate all of the visitors and phone calls however, this is preventing him from getting any rest. He is scheduled for 1 more "surgery" on Saturday, seems they have a procedure they call a wash....to make sure the wound is as clean as possible. His doctor has asked them to spread the word to hold up on too many phone calls and visitors for right now. He really needs to rest

Spoke to Pat this morning and they are working on getting Mike into a rehab facility close to home. He is doing much better and can't wait to get out of the hospital.

Just spoke to both Mike and Pat Cappiello...he is doing great....sitting in a chair wiggling his toes and bending his knees. They plan to transfer him to Glen Cove Hospital tomorrow for rehab....he says he will only be there for a few hours and then he will be fine...he's such a silly man!!!!

It was great to see Mike back last night. I got to speek with him a couple of times and while still hurting he was happy as could be to be at the track again.

So nice to see mike back at the track last night.He is one of the best officals i have ever seen at riverhead. He will talk to you like a person and he knows how to treat people. I know being an officals is a thankless job and your are going to disagree sometimes but when you are talked to like a human being it goes a long way and it makes you want to come back and race the next week even when something bad happens. Thank you mike for being the person you are.
