St. Johns, PA- Sundance Vacations Speedway Promoter Joe Callavini has been a businessman in the Hazleton, Pa. area for nearly 50 years. During that time, Callavini’s strong business acumen has kept D+B Towing thriving even during tough economic times. This past week, Callavini met with Speedway officials to discuss ways to save both the fan and the racer some precious dollars to keep them enjoying their passion at Sundance Vacations Speedway.
Beginning on June 12, race fans that bring a ticket stub from the previous week’s event will receive a $2 discount on grandstand admission. Additionally, fans should check their local newspapers for discount coupons for Sundance Vacations Speedway.
“We want to encourage new race fans to visit the Speedway and see the great family entertainment we have to offer as well as reward our loyal, repeat customers,” said Callavini.
With regular adult grandstand admission at just $10 and children 10 and under always admitted free, Sundance Vacations Speedway’s exciting short-track racing program provides a great, inexpensive alternative to other forms of entertainment.
For the Speedway’s rising stars, the economy has provided an uphill battle for them to continue putting on a show for their fans. Last season, the Speedway decided to go with an “A” and “B” program, alternating divisions to provide racers with an every-other-week schedule, which was well received by all competitors. So, Callavini, along with speedway management, has once again come up with a plan to help racers reduce their costs. Beginning with the June 12 program, Sport Modified and Late Model competitors will be limited to a maximum of two new tires per week. The reduced weekly cost will allow more low-budget teams to race more often and be on a more competitive footing with higher budget organizations.
“Tires have become a huge expense for race teams in recent years,” Callavini said. “The difference between winning and losing shouldn't have to be determined by who bought the most tires. And, since we sell the tires at the track, it is very easy for us to limit tire purchases.”
Mother Nature played a role in another announcement resulting from this past week’s meeting. The remaining dates for the Drive for Five Modified series have been cancelled, with the exception of the 11th Annual King of the Mountain scheduled for October 9-10. They will be replaced with regular “A” program shows.
“The threatening weather kept away both fans and racecars, I cannot take another chance like that,” said Callavini. “Everyone worked so hard to put it together and it just kills me to pull the plug, but we really have no choice.”
Lastly, Barry Callavini, son of Promoter Joe Callavini, will be parking his Tour and Sport Modifieds to join the Sundance Vacations Speedway officiating staff for 2010. When he is not working as a Speedway official, Barry plans to focus on select, special events with his Modifieds.
As Sundance Vacations Speedway enacts these changes to combat today’s times, the Speedway takes a look at its past with this Saturday’s Evergreen Reunion. Many folks from the track’s yesteryears will be attending, with Tour-Type Modifieds, Street Stocks, FWD’s, and ATQMRA midgets on the racing docket plus vintage racecars from the past. Grandstands open at 4 p.m., with racing beginning at 5 p.m. And, not only will the show roll back the clock, the Speedway will roll back admission to only $5. With a bargain like that, we’ll see you at the races!
