CAN ANYONE STOP BUCK?

Feature wins will help Buck Catalano climb the NASCAR Whelen All-American points ranking, but the question remains after Catalano won his third straight Sunoco Modified feature in a row last Friday, “Can anyone stop Buck?”

“It’s getting harder to win each week,” stated Catalano in victory lane. “Last week we moved to the front and this week we did the same but we could not pull away from ( Kevin ) Timmerman. Their crew has been doing their homework.”

Buck went on to thank all of the fans for supporting the races at Spencer. “We can not do this with out them.”

The Sunoco Modified feature offered double points.

Due to unforeseen circumstances and other commitments many of the street stocks were not on hand. Those that were there had to be combined with the Super Six division. It made for an interesting 20-lap main event. Mitchell Wright beat out Kris Hillegeer for the Street Stock victory, while in the Super Sixes, Skip Powers moved into first on lap seven and never looked back. Even with the combination of these two classes and the differences in speeds only two yellows slowed the race.

The Auto Value Scorpions ran a great 15-lapper going green-to-checkers without a yellow. Up front Bro Bradshaw recorded feature win number two on the season.

On hand for a special appearance were the Legend cars. Eight cars started the 20-lap main event, with Brad Salatino leading almost the entire distance to take his first career win at Spencer Speedway.

“I was just hoping to keep my arms from giving out,” stated Salatino. He also elaborated on the fine new racing surface at Spencer.

Kevin Timmerman grabbed the early lead at the drop of the green in the 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified main event. Matt Lees moved into second followed by Ryan Beeman. For Buck Catalano, it only took him five circuits to move into second and then start to close the ten car length advantage Timmerman had built up. Catalano had half the distance made up by lap 12, when the yellow flew. Daryl Lewis Jr. had coasted to a stop on the back stretch driving the 23 of Phil Wehrheim.

This yellow allowed Catalano to restart on the outside of Timmerman. The pair raced side-by-side to the delight of the crowd, but just after two thrilling laps, the yellow flew again. This time Jim Steffenhagen Jr. slide off the third turn into the grass.

Catalano had just nosed out Timmerman at the line and was now starting first on the inside of the track. Catalano used this to his advantage and took the lead for good. It was now Timmerman’s turn to run second. Ed die Hawkins was in third, until lap 25 when the yellow came out as Hawkins spun down the back stretch, thus allowing Amy Catalano to take over the show position.

Two more late race cautions bunched the field together. At the line it was Catalano followed by Timmerman, Chris Finocchario, Amy Catalano and Toad Bradshaw, to make up the top five.

The combined Street Stock and Super Six feature saw the street stocks of Mitchell Wright and Kris Hillegeer at the front of the field. In just ten laps they completely lapped the entire Super Six field. As they were lapping Hillegeer was able to use a Super Six car as a pick and pass Wright for the lead. Wright was able to regain the front spot and remain there until the checkers flew.

As for the Super Sixes, Brian Hallett took the lead for three laps when Chris Andolino passed him for the lead. It wasn’t long before Skip Powers caught and passed Andolino for the lead.

On lap 10, the yellow flew when Hallett and Adam VanHall came together and looped on the backstretch. This bunched the field together, but Andolino fell short on the restart and allowed Powers to maintain the lead. Three laps later the yellow was out as Andolino slowed on the front stretch trying to make the pits with a flat tire.

Powers held on for the victory, followed by Peter Cowell, Ryan Hillegeer, Patti Davenport and Joe Bailey.

The Legend cars stopped on the front stretch for a “ Le Mans ” type introduction. When the green flew pole sitter Brad Salatino blasted into the lead, as they turned laps in the mid-23 second range. However as they cross the start-finish line Jake Vernon was able to put his nose ahead of Salatino to be recorded as the leader of the first lap. But from this point on the race was all Salatino.

At the finish it would be Salatino followed by Vernon , Jeremy Haudricourt, Brett Coon and Cal Vilardo.

The Legend cars will return twice more to Spencer, July 23 and August 13.

The Auto Value Scorpions were able to race green-to-checkers in their 15 lap main event. Pole sitter Michael Bradshaw took the early lead. The racing action saw a three wide scramble down the front stretch between Bro Bradshaw, Russell Peets and Otis Bradshaw on just the second lap, with Bro coming out in third.

On lap five Bro ducked low under Alison Knoepfler to take second and set sights on Michael. On lap nine Bro grabbed the lead from Michael and led until the checkers flew. With just three laps remaining Knoepfler was able to work her way back into second, dropping Michael Bradshaw back to third. On the final lap Otis was able to pass Michael to finish third, moving Michael back to fourth. Peets rounded out the top five finishers.

This Friday, June 18th, will be All County Construction night at Spencer Speedway. Topping the action will be the return of the Race of Champions Modifieds for a 75-lap RoC Qualifier. This past week three RoC cars were on hand to practice and try out the new racing surface; Mike Leaty, Zack Shove and Tim McMillan. Joining the RoC Modifieds will be a complete program of Sunoco Modifieds, Street Stock, Super Six and Auto Value Scorpion races. Heat races begin at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Spencer Speedway is located just fifteen minutes east of Rochester , NY , along Route 104 in the Town of Williamson . Spencer Speedway is the local “ NASCAR Place to Race” for upstate New York . Points earned each week at Spencer are counted into the national NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship.
