BUCK CATALANO MAKES IT FOUR WINS IN A ROW-HOSSFELD WINS RoC 75-LAP SPECIAL

Buck Catalano made it four wins in four outings this season at Spencer Speedway, picking up Sunoco Modified career win number 52 last Friday, June 18.

“I want to dedicate this win to my aunt in Wisconsin who passed away this past week,” stated Catalano. When asked about his car, Catalano added,” This car is really getting good. It comes off the second turn great.”

In a special 75-lap Race of Champions Modified event Ransomville’s Chuck Hossfeld took the victory. Spencer’s own Bill Hebing came home in second followed by Matt Hirschman, Rusty Smith and Earl Paul us rounded out the top five finishers. When asked about the new surface at Spencer Hossfeld related, “To see some one make improvements, even in these economic times, is great. This track will be good for a long time to come.”

Complete results of this event can be found elsewhere in this publication.

In accompanying support events Kris Hillegeer won the 20-lap Street Stock feature, Kevin DeVuyst won the Super Six feature and Bro Bradshaw won his third win of the year in the Auto Value Scorpion class.

The 35 lap Sunoco Modified feature saw pole sitter Chris Finocchario take the early lead with Kevin Timmerman moving into the runner up position. Each lap Buck Catalano made his move on the high side, exiting the second turn. By lap six he was third. The only yellow of the event came on lap six, when Mark Cline spun around in the first turn trying to avoid contact with Ryan Beeman. After the contact, Beeman’s car was done for the night.

The restart saw Timmerman move up next to Finocchario and race him side-by-side for two laps. Each time Finocchario was able to barely maintain the lead. On lap eight, Catalano made his presence known. He dove low exiting the fourth turn and took second, at the line, from Timmerman. He then move by Finocchario for the lead.

At this same time Timmerman was able to complete a pass on Finocchario for second. Timmerman then closed on Catalano, first trying the low side down the backstretch, then the high side. Each time Timmerman’s move fell short.

Both Catalano and Timmerman were breaking away from the rest of the field by lap 16. At the 30 lap mark Catalano turned it on and took a four car advantage over Timmerman. At the finish line it would be Catalano for his fourth win of the season, followed by Timmerman, Finocchario, Matt Lees and Ed die Hawkins.

The first feature of the night was the 20-lap Auto Value Scorpion Four Cylinder cars. Twelve cars took the green. At the completion of the first lap, fourth place starter Mike Bradshaw held the lead. Mike began to stretch his lead over Otis Bradshaw, Zach Willis and Bro Bradshaw.

An unusual yellow for this division, flew on lap five when Russell Peets spun in the first turn. He immediately exited to the pits and the racing resumed.

Bro took the lead with Otis moving into second. These two would then take turns at the front of the field. Oddly enough each one led eight laps each, awarding each the extra five points for leading the most laps.

When it counted Bro was out front taking his third feature win of the year. Otis finish second followed by Mike. Willis and Ryan Brown rounded out the top five finishers.

“I could ask for more, with Otis and I battling like that,” stated Bro Bradshaw in victory lane. “In our go-kart days I was the “double 0”, but Otis took that number in this class, so I settled for just ’0’.”

The Street Stocks saw just three cars take the green for a 20-lap feature. On lap seven, last week’s winner, Mitchell Wright, slowed to a stop on the exit of the fourth turn to bring out a yellow. Kris Hillegeer led Roger Worden for the remaining laps to take the victory to become the first repeat winner of the year.

“It was fun, even with so few cars tonight,” stated Hillegeer. “I was lucky because my car became really loose as the race progressed.”

The Super Six class was scheduled for a 25-lap main event, but due to the number of yellows the race was shortened to just 20-laps.

At the drop of the green, rookie Brian Hallett powered his Pontiac into the lead and stretched out his lead. Joe Bailey was second followed by Chris Andolino in third.

The first yellow flew on lap six when Adam VanHall slide off the track between turns one and two. The restart saw one more lap completed, but the yellow flying again. This time Bailey’s car slide straight off the second turn in a shower of sparks, due to mechanical failure.

Hallett still held the lead on each restart, but now Kevin DeVuyst, driving the powerful number 41 car, was second. .

On lap 14 the yellow flew, not once, but twice, both times for spins. One lap after the race resumed, DeVuyst was able to sneak under Hallett exiting the fourth turn. With just two lap remaining, Peter Cowell was also able to pass Hallett for second.

At the finish line it would be DeVuyst followed by Cowell, Hallett, Ryan Hillegeer and Tim Faro to round out the top five finishers.
