Jason Myers to Start on Pole Tonight at Bowman Gray
Jonathan Brown takes checkered in last night’s racing.

Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem takes the checkered in a wild 50-lapper at Bowman Gray Stadium last night – but more excitement is yet to come tonight.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour makes a stop at Bowman Gray Stadium tonight for the Strutmasters.com 199. With the history and fame surrounding the legendary quarter-mile track, the 199-lapper is one of the premiere highlights of the touring division’s schedule.

After qualifying sixth, Jason Myers of Walnut Cove will start on the pole tonight after the top ten qualifiers drew for starting position. Jason Myers won the event in 2006, with brother Burt Myers claiming the checkered for the 199-lap race in 2005 and 2007. “If we make this number four, we turn this into the Myers show - and that’d be alright with me,” said Jason Myers.

“Everybody knows we got a fast race car – we just got 200 laps tomorrow to show them,” said Jason Myers, who is happy but yet anxious to be starting up front. “If we can get it out front that’s the safest place to be. But you never know over here - you got a bull’s-eye on your back when you run up front.”

Zach Brewer of Winston-Salem turned the fastest lap of the night and will start seventh. With tour points championships on his mind, Brewer realizes the importance of tonight’s race. “A win we would be ecstatic with; but a top-five - we have got to have that,” said Brewer.

In addition to their strong tour performances, Burt and Jason Myers were prominent forces in tonight’s 50-lap race for Bowman Gray Stadium’s Bill Plemmons RV World Modified Series. Jason Myers drew second as his start with Burt starting in third. Jonathan Brown started on the pole.

Jason Myers nearly claimed the lead during the initial start, but Jonathan Brown was able to make use of the inner groove to stay up front. Myers tried again for three double-file restarts, but the #53 of Jonathan Brown continued to hold fast. During the third double-file restart, Jason Myers was caught on the outside row, allowing Burt Myers to slip into second.

A restart just three laps later gave Burt Myers the chance to challenge Jonathan Brown for the lead. Myers sailed ahead as the green flag waved to grab the lead as he entered turn one. Brown settled back into second.

During the next double-file restart, Jonathan Brown took to the outside to try to reclaim his spot at the head of the pack. He and Myers raced side-by-side for nearly three laps, but Jonathan Brown was unable to edge ahead of Myers. Brown was, however, able to deliver a few taps to the rear bumper of Myers over the next few laps.

On lap 35, Brown gave a shot to Myers that sent him spinning, placing Myers in the rear while Jonathan Brown moved into the lead. Brown was able to stay up front and claim the checkered.

“My car was just getting better and better; Burt’s was getting worse and worse,” said Jonathan Brown about his incident with Myers. “I hate that it came to that, but I just got into the gas before he did. It’s just part of this place right here.”

Myers was able to fight his way back up to an eighth place finish, but still nothing compares to taking the checkered that he feels should have been his. “It’s a shame you have to do that type of racing,” said Myers about Jonathan Brown’s move.

Jason Myers finishes in second, with Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg taking third.
In the Time Warner Cable Stadium Stock Series, Drew Moffitt of Winston-Salem claimed victory in a 15-lapper, with Kyle Southern of King and Ben Brown of Westfield finishing in second and third.

In the Bandoleros Division races, Clayton Weatherman of St. Louis , MO and John Holleman of Winston-Salem each claimed victory. In the Legends Division races, Chase Catania of El Cajon , CA , Brian Kolb of Mooresville, Daniel Hemric of Kannapolis, and Larry Friddle of Greenville , SC each won. Johnny Johnson of Tobaccoville won the race for the East Coast Flathead Fords.

Tonight, ticket gates open at 6:00 for practice. The first race starts at 8:00. For more information, visit www.bowmangrayracing.com.
