Rocco finds Winner’s Circle again;
Staskowski a first time Late Model winner while Stone, Bellisle and Flannery record repeat victories

An exciting round of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing took place Saturday night at Waterford Speedbowl, presented by The Rock 106.9 WCCC. Keith Rocco of Wallingford bested Todd Ceravolo of Gales Ferry for the second consecutive week to win another exciting SK Modified® feature. Hope Valley, Rhode Island racer Rich Staskowski recorded his first career win in the Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model race. Al Stone III of New Haven won his third Street Stock division event of the year to keep pace in the championship standings. Louis Bellisle doubled up the Norwich Bulletin Mini Stock field, winning his second consecutive race, while teenager Anthony Flannery of East Hampton won his 14th Legends Cars race this season but first since July 3rd.

Tom Abele Jr. and Joe Perry were the early pace setters for the 35-lap SK Modified® race. The first 13 laps clicked off in rapid fashion with third through fifteenth place locked in battle to advance their position. That run ended when Diego Monahan, battling within that pack, made contact with the backstretch wall and slowed in turn four to bring out the caution flag.

Abele continued to lead over Perry, Glen Pressell III, Rob Janovic Jr. and Rocco, who advanced from his starting spot deep in the field as the race reached halfway. Janovic and Rocco made their way under Pressell as the field completed lap 18. Trouble just behind the top five saw defending champion Ron Yuhas Jr. spin between turns one and two, collecting Tyler Chadwick and Kyle James to bring out the yellow.

On the next restart Janovic and Rocco were able to rocket under Perry for second and third behind Abele. Todd Ceravolo moved into the top five on lap 20 and joined the mix up front. Janovic tried an outside move on Abele for the race lead. That gave Rocco opportunity to dive under Janovic for second. Those two raced side-by-side while Ceravolo went outside Perry for fourth.

As Janovic tried to make the outside lane work, Abele drifted up slightly exiting turn two on lap 25 allowing Rocco a look at the lead. Rocco made the move and cleared Abele, bringing Janovic and Ceravolo with him past Abele to make up the top three positions on lap 26. A caution for a spin in turn two by Jeff Gallup on lap 29 set the field for a restart.

Ceravolo took second from Janovic. He tested Rocco with a bump in turn three, giving Janovic a lane to challenge to retake second. Ceravolo and Janovic battled for second until Perry spun from fifth in turn two on lap 32 which created a multiple-car incident that collected Doug Coby, Frank Mucciacciaro, Pressell as well as both Joe and Adam Gada.

The final restart pitted Rocco versus Ceravolo, with Janovic in third for a rematch of last week’s shootout among the three. Rocco got the jump on the green flag with Ceravolo able to quickly tuck in behind ahead of Janovic into turn one. Ceravolo stayed glued to Rocco’s bumper for the next two and a half laps, trying to disrupt the leader’s rhythm. Janovic was in striking distance to pounce on any mishap.

Ceravolo made a move to the outside of Rocco headed into turn three of the final lap. He was able to pull alongside in a sprint to the finish out of turn four. Ceravolo fell a half-car length short at the checkered flag, while Rocco recorded his second consecutive and ninth Speedbowl win of the season. Janovic, Abele and Jeff Paul completed the top five.

The Bob Valenti Auto Mall Late Model field got their 30-lap event underway with Vin Esposito bolting to the early lead. The field was very active early, racing for position throughout the top fourteen positions. Brian Andronaco Jr. settled into second ahead of Jason Palmer. The first caution waved on lap 9 when veteran competitor Jeff Zuidema spun in turn four.

Esposito found Palmer on his bumper following the restart. Rich Staskowski moved up to third, bringing defending champion Bruce Thomas Jr. to fourth ahead of Andronaco. At halfway the best action was for seventh as J.R. Baril challenged Ernie Bertrand for the spot with point leaders Tim Jordan and Jeff Smith just behind.

Back up front Palmer was within striking distance of Esposito, applying pressure on the leader. Contact exiting turn two on lap 19 got Esposito loose off turn two, eventually spinning to the infield to bring out the caution again. Palmer resumed from the rear, putting Staskowski and Thomas on the front row.

Staskowski got the best of Thomas on the restart, with Joe Curioso claiming second and leaving Thomas to battle with Jordan. Thomas pulled away from Jordan to reel Curioso back in. He, Jordan and Bertrand found their way by Curioso by the time five laps remained. Thomas was closing on Staskowski, but ran out of time to challenge. Staskowski went on to his first career win in the division. Thomas was second over Jordan, Bertrand and Jeff Paul.

Nate Appell and defending champion Brandon Plemons spent the first 5 circuits battling for the lead of the 25-lap Street Stock race. Plemons prevailed in the outside lane when Appell slipped, bouncing back through the top five on lap 6. Stone emerged in second over Ed Puleo and Norm Sears. Further back Josh Galvin and point leader Walt Hovey battled for fifth as the race stayed caution free through halfway.

Stone was looking for a way around Plemons. He finally made a move to the low side as Plemons also had to hold off Puleo in the outside groove. Stone ran two laps to the inside of Plemons before taking over on lap 14. He was able to pull out to a five car length advantage over a battle for second behind.

While Stone went on to record his third victory of the year in the caution free race, Sears came out ahead in the battle for second with Puleo in third. Plemons took fourth at the checkered flag and Galvin finally won the battle for fifth over Hovey at the checkered flag.

First year driver Jeffrey Cembruch led the opening nine laps of the 25-lap Norwich Bulletin Mini Stock feature event with Bill Leonard and Chris Williams working their way through the pack. Bellisle was also on the move, coming through to the top three behind Cembruch and Leonard by lap 10.

Leonard took command on lap 11 with Bellisle moving in behind the new leader on lap 12. Those two then went toe-to-toe for the lead over the middle third of the race. The pair spent much of that time side-by-side, with Leonard ultimately edging ahead in the outside lane when caution finally waved.

Leonard had the inside lane for the restart, but Bellisle was able to use the outside lane to overtake Leonard for control of the event. With Bellisle distancing himself from second over the final seven laps, he was able to cruise to his second consecutive win.

The battle for second was tough between Leonard, Chris Williams, Ken Cassidy Jr. and point leader Danny Field. Williams took the spot but got plenty of pressure from Cassidy as Leonard faded in the outside lane. With the white flag in the air, contact for second sent Williams around, getting tagged by Ben Bargnesi.

Bellisle crossed the stripe well ahead of Field who wound up second after the last lap incident. Leonard was third, with Nick Pappacoda and Sean Caron moving to fourth and fifth position at the finish. Field was able to stretch his points lead after the final lap incident involving Cassidy.

George Whitney was the early leader in the 20-lap Legends Cars race, but Alessandro Vitelli pressured him from the get-go with David Garbo Jr. riding third. Dana Dimatteo and Flannery rounded out the top five over the first five laps. Dimatteo and Flannery both got around Garbo on lap 6. At the head of the field Vitelli closed on Whitney’s bumper on lap 7, but contact sent the leader around in front of the field to bring out caution. Vitelli was put to the rear, giving the lead to Dimatteo.

Flannery set up Dimatteo with an inside move to take the lead on lap 9, with Dimatteo trying to duplicate the move a lap later with Flannery fending him off. Trouble in the back half of the top ten entering turn three of lap 11 sent Joey Mucciacciaro violently crashing into the wall with Angelo Belsito to bring out the red flag. Both drivers were ok following the incident.

Another red flag flew on lap 13 for Joey Campbell who crashed hard into turn one. When racing resumed, the field ran to the checkered flag. Flannery found himself back in victory lane for the 14th time of the year. Ed Field snuck past Dimatteo with two laps remaining to score second. Garbo was able to get by as well for third, a half car within second on Field. Dimatteo and Vitelli completed the top-five.
