St. Johns, Pa- Double points, $900 to win and a 50-lap feature was the main focus for the Late Model division on Weis Markets Night last Saturday at Sundance Vacations Speedway. When it was all said and done, Zane Zeiner of Bath, PA led flag to flag and took top honors. Ricky Ross, Jr. of Mountaintop, PA endured many cautions to claim his second Sport Modified feature win of the season and Paul Morgan, Jr. of Mountaintop, PA earned his fifth Factory Stock victory of the year.

Brian Sones started from the pole and led the opening lap of the Sport Modified main event. Dan Speeney held the second spot in the early going, followed by Geary Rinehimer, Jr., Nick Pecko and Ricky Ross, Jr.

Jerry Hildebrand worked his way up to the fourth position and was overtaken by Ross for the position on lap 10.

Nick Pecko worked into the second spot. However, he was forced pit side with mechanical issues during a lap 12 caution.

Up to that point in the race, a slew of yellow flags slowed the event, which kept the field of cars tight together restart after restart. Sones remained out front with D. Speeney in second.

Following a lap 14 yellow, Ross, who held the third spot at the time, overtook D. Speeney for second. Two laps later he shot by Sones and into the lead.

Yellow flag after yellow flag, Ross held his line and held on to the race lead. Meanwhile, Mike Speeney cracked the top five, as did Todd Baer. M. Speeney overtook Sones for second following a lap 24 restart.

The yellow flew on lap 37 when Jerry Hildebrand slammed the front stretch wall. Hildebrand was not injured, but his car was towed off the speedway by the dreadful ‘double hook’. The drivers were told over the radio that if the caution would come out before the end of the originally scheduled 40-lap race, the checkered flag would be thrown. Indeed it happened.

With two laps remaining, D. Speeney and Will Schneider tangled and brought out the yellow. Ross took the checkered flag for his second $1000 win of the season over M. Speeney and Rinehimer. Mike Skarbowski started 14th and finished fourth. Sones rounded out the top five.

Heat race victories went to Brian Sones and Geary Rinehimer, Jr.

Zane Zeiner started form the pole position in the 50-lap double points Late Model main event. He led the opening circuit with Kyle Harvell, Todd Geist, Justin Onderko and Mike Sweeney in tow.

Sweeney overtook Geist for the fourth spot on lap two and on the following lap Onderko shot by Harvell to move into the runner up spot.

Lorin Arthofer spun in turns three and four, which brought out a yellow flag on lap 10. Green flag racing resumed and several drivers began to make a charge toward the front, including Joe Hoffman and Jimmy Wismer.

Hoffman wasted no time making his way into the top five and then ran down Sweeney for second on lap 13. He overtook Sweeney for the spot and set his sights on the leader. Meanwhile, Wismer moved into the fourth position.

The worst pf eight cautions flew on lap 20 when Joe Polny bounced his ride off the front stretch wall. Green flag racing resumed with Zeiner out front over Hoffman, Sweeney, Wismer and Onderko.

Hoffman gave Zeiner a run for his money over the closing laps but came up short in the end. Zeiner went on to claim his first victory of the season and dedicated the win to his crewmember Chase, who lost his brother the night before in an accident.

Hoffman was content with his second straight runner up effort, followed by Wismer, Sweeney and Onderko.

Heat race victories went to Todd Geist and Zane Zeiner.

Keith Frankenfield started from the pole and led the opening circuit of the 20-lap Factory Stock feature over Rich Paciotti, Brandon Oltra, Joey Barbush and Eric Wink.

Paciotti took his turn as the leader following a lap two pass and then Oltra took the top spot two circuits later.

Meanwhile, Paul Morgan, Jr. moved into second on lap five. Paciotti held third, with E. Wink and Bob Wink in the top five.

Near the halfway point in the event, smoke began to come from underneath the leader’s car. It got worse and Morgan grabbed the lead on lap 10. Shortly after, Oltra was forced to retire due to a faulty water pump.

With Morgan in command, E. Wink held second, followed by B. Wink, Matt Schlenker and Jeff Searfoss.

The final yellow flag flew with three to go when Searfoss attempted to overtake B. Wink for in turn four. Searfoss had the inside advantage and B. Wink tried to slam the door. The end result was B. Wink in a spin.

Green flag racing resumed and Morgan was untouchable over the closing laps and cruised to his fifth feature win of the season over E. Wink, Searfoss, Schlenker and Kendall Foulk.

Joey Barbush and Matt Schlenker were heat race winners.

Several young drivers from the Keystone State Quarter Midget Racing Club were on hand and they were ecstatic to run their quarter midget racecars for the fans on the speedway during intermission. Several of the children enjoyed interviews by the track announcers and the applause from the large crowd at the track.

Gordy Buchman, Jr, Craig Lutz and Dean Kline were the Sundance Vacations Contingency Program winners.
