OKERSON WINS JOHN BLEWETT III MEMORIAL SATURDAY AT WALL STADIUM

Chas Okerson of Freehold continued his bid to become a repeating driving champion by winning the 76-lap “John Blewett III Memorial” Modified stock car race Saturday night at Wall Stadium. The annual event is presented in the memory of the popular Howell driver who lost his life in a racing accident in Connecticut three years ago.

After a front row starting position was chosen for him in a blind draw, Okerson survived an initial start front stretch mishap before charging to the lead on the ensuing restart. Chris Hamilton of North Haledon was then the first challenger for the top spot as he haunted Okerson through the middle of the race. Hamilton also endured pressure as his racing teammate, Pete Brittain of Allentown, ran third.

Once past the 40-lap mark, Brittain turned up the steam as he advanced to second with 43 laps down. He then chased Okerson all the way to the finish line before settling for second. Shaun Carrig of Little Falls was third, with Hamilton holding on for fourth and Roger Coss of Lafayette crossing the line fifth.

“It is an honor to win this race in John’s memory,” Okerson said after his fourth Supreme Manufacturing Modified win of the year. “We are thinking about John and his family tonight.

“My car was very good tonight from the time we took it off the trailer. My dad and my family take care of that. This car is always good.”

In support division action, Chris Lane of Howell jumped to the lead early and raced to his first ever Sportsman stock car 25-lap feature race win. Brick’s Robert Sutphin chased Lane most of the way, before Eric Mauriello of Howell slipped past Sutphin for second on the closing lap. Charlie Kremer III and David Calabrese, both of Toms River, were fourth and fifth.

Gregg Miranda of Hazlet led the first ten laps of the Street Stock 25-lapper before Anthony Crimaldi of Port Monmouth took command. Still, former champ Bill Vanderveen of Beachwood was on the move as he slipped into the top spot with just a few laps remaining. Crimaldi and Miranda were second and third at the finish, with Mike Kennedy of Pt. Pleasant and Jackson’s Howie Conk fourth and fifth.

Point leader Trevor Alspach of Willingboro grabbed the lead on lap 13 and then raced on to his eighth win of the year in the Legend Cars 25-lapper. Kenny Van Wickle of Spring Lake Heights, who led earlier in the race, crossed the line second, with Brian Spencer of Edison, Ron Poley of Egg Harbor Twp. and Eatontown’s Malcolm Campbell third through fifth.

Shanon Mongeau of Brick crossed the finish line first in the 20-lap nightcap for the Flanagan Retail Development Factory Stocks, but when his car failed a post-race inspection Todd Pilla of Beachwood was awarded the win. Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach, point leader Rob Longo of Wall, Tuckerton’s Robby Walton and Rick Williams of Red Bank were second through fifth.

Stock car action then continues at Wall Stadium this Saturday night, August 21, with “Family Fun Night” racing action. The Flanagan Retail Development Factory Stocks will lead the way in a 75-lapper, while the Legend Cars, Sr. Champ Karts, Micro Stocks and the 4C SuperModifieds will also be on the card.

Pit gates will open at 12:30 p.m. on August 21, with a paid practice session set from 1:30 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. The regular practice session will be up at 4:00 p.m., while grandstand seating will also open at 4:00 p.m. Qualifying is set for 6:30 p.m. and main event action is set for 7:30 p.m. This Saturday night “summer schedule” will be in effect through Labor Day weekend.

On Sunday, August 22, the fifth mile paved “inner oval” returns to action with the 2010 “Sunday Series” featuring Go Karts, wingless Midgets, Legend Cars and Micro Stocks starting at noon. For more information call 732-681-6400 or visit http://www.wallsundayseries.com.
