Hersey, Kimball battle for Championship

Once again a great night of excitement at the the northeast fastest highbanks. Fans and competitors were reminded that the track is celebrating its anniversary of its opening day which was Friday 13th 1971. It was fitting that the Antique Racers would be on hand to show fans some of the cars that ran many area speedways during the 1950's and 60's. These cars traveled our region at tracks like the Cheshire Fairgrounds track, Rythm Inn in Millers Falls Ma (next to now Turners Falls airport) , North Hinsdale track, Claremont Speedway ( now TwinState Speedway) to West Brattleboro (now property of Vermont Traveler Rv Sales). In passion and devotion in the preservation of our racing hertitage these cars, in some cases, fully restored look better now then in there days of competition. Tonight would see Bill Kemp in his famous 199 Chevy Camaro body car take his first victory at Monadnock as he had never had a win during normal competition. During introductions fans learned that the Whelan Modified Tour will be back to our track next year, so mark your calenders for June 25, 2011. This date normally set for New Hampshire Motor Speedway will be welcomed as ours instead.

As the night began with racing season is winding down, points battles in many divisions will come down to the wire. Two points seperate Bill Kimball over Russ Hersey in the Sportman Modified Series. Our own Tour Type Modifieds leader Kirk Alexander has an 8 point lead over second place Todd Patnode. This division was off this week but will return to action next week. Barry Gray has jumped out to a commanding lead, but Brandon Ovitt and Mark Parks are are battling for second place in the Outlaw Pro's. Bill Johnston has the lead in the Super Stocks but only a few points separate John Lavoie and Chris Curtiss for 2nd and 3rd place. Mini Stocks Chris Davis has the lead in the championship point standings. Julia Raymond has the lead in the 4-cylinder Enduro series, while Ryan Rivet leads the full size enduro.

Qualifying heats were battles to the checkered in the Mini Stocks, and Pro 4 Modifieds, but came to a halt during the Sportsmen Modified heat two. This heat was stopped with a red flag when #52 of Ricky Labreque would have contact with the #2 of Dave Knight and when the smoke settled Labreque ended up on Knight’s roof. Both cars had to be towed from the track, but would return for the feature.

Young Guns would see victory for Adam Manley, who had an announcement of his own, telling fans that he would be stepping up to a mini stock next week. Good luck Adam. Second Place belonged to Hillary Renuad and third to JT Cloutier. Lap 12 contact between hard charging Joe Boivin and Renaud would send Boivin spinning onto the front stretch apron putting a dampner on his night.

Mini Stocks would see veteran racer Joey Kendall, who started last, battle to the front. By lap twelve Kendall was in third. On lap 17 Kendall took the lead and contact between #87 of Beth Adams and #45 of Eric Dejackome gave the second spot to Adams. By lap 19 Kendall had a half track lead over Adams. Kendall would seize his 4th victory of the season with Adams in for second and Dejackome for third. Kimmy Rivet came in for the fourth spot and points leader Chris Davis for fifth in the caution free 25 lap feature.

The New England Race Trucks made their second venture to the high-banks and Willie Auchmoody would be able to take the monkey off his back and capture his first win here. Second would be had by many time winner Gee Perry followed by Andy Lindeman for third.
Super Stocks would only see one caution coming in lap two as the #33 of John Lavoie would be assisted around by the #71 of Dave Striebel. The #71 would be sent to the rear of the field on the restart as a penalty. Joe Bates would get win number three on the season with Eddie Brehio III in second and Nick Boivin for third. Chris Curtis would bring his Fusion into fourth and point leader Bill Johnston finished respectfully in fifth.

Pro 4 Modifieds had a very respectful car count and would flex their horsepower. The caution of lap seven for a single car spin would tighten the field. On lap twenty-two the #12 of the race leader would leave fans wondering if he can close the deal for the win as he starts to show smoke from the right rear. Rob Richardi Jr was able to keep his car together for the win after passing his brother #00 Dave Richardi who would hold on for third, while Brian Vincent kept his #10 riding the rail into second. #01 of Andy Norton would come from the rear and finish fourth and previous Monadnock winner #60 of Andy Major for fifth.

The Outlaw Pros would see Steve Gauthier in his #57 start on the pole and finish 3rd. Hard charging racers Barry Gray and Brandon Ovitt would battle for the lead, but Gray would secure the win while Ovitt came in second and Gauthier in third.

Sportmen Modifieds would compete for 30 ground pounding laps. Pole sitter Paul Laffond set the pace on lap one. On lap three the #26 of Nate Kehoe made the pass and would lead until lap fourteen when the #88 of Russ Hersey reached out and took over the first spot. Lap sixteen saw Bill Kimball make an impressive move and pass Kehoe and #20 Rich Fournier to demand the second spot. Kimball would set his sights on Hersey, and when the caution waived on lap nineteen some thought that maybe this was the brake Kimball needed. Caution was shown on lap twenty-three when Laffond and new driver to this series in the #27 Eddie Brehio III, get together spinning on the front strech. Caution flies again on lap twenty-four when the #1 of Nick Boivin received contact from the #26 of Kehoe who cut directly down on Boivin on the front stretch. On a single file restart for lap twenty-five, Hersey would hold on to win, with Kimball for second, and Rich Fournier for third. After the heat crash Ricky Labreque finished fourth and with some dents in his roof, and Dave Knight was in for fifth. This leaves Kimball and Hersey tied for the points lead.

4 Cylinder Enduros blasted out for 50 laps of wild side by side three and four wide racing. At the checkered flag Toby Wells had the win, with Matt Gaufinn second, Heath Renaud third, current points leader Julia Raymond fourth and Tim Leblanc fifth. These folks really know how to put a car where most would not think it would fit.

This Saturday, the action returns to the ¼ mile on Whelen Engineering Night. The nights will feature the return of the Tour Type Modifieds, 35 Lap Mini Stock Conquest, Super Stocks, Young Guns and Full Size Enduros. Race time is at 6pm.
