St. Johns, Pa- Following a DNF in his last outing, Ricky Ross, Jr., the Sport Modified points leader at Sundance Vacations Speedway set out on a mission- to win. That mission was accomplished on Sunday when Ross, of Mountain Top, took the lead just past the halfway point and was unchallenged to take his third $1000 win of the season. Justin Onderko stayed out of trouble, held off his competition and drove away with his first career Late Model victory and Matt Schlenker of Walnutport endured the Factory Stock feature to snag his first career victory.

Brian Sones started from the pole and led the first circuit of the 40-lap Sport Modified main event. Jason Hearne ran second, followed by Nick Pecko, Ricky Ross, Jr. and Todd Baer.

Appearing to be driving a rocket, Rusty Smith grabbed the fifth spot from Baer on the second lap and then overtook Pecko for fourth during the next time around.

Smith jumped to the outside to overtake Ross for third and meanwhile, another driver ducked underneath Ross as the trio raced through turn two. The car underneath Ross made contact and shot him up the track. Unfortunately, Smith was to his outside. The end result was a caution flag for Smith hitting the wall and retiring from the event after the lap 10 incident.

Green flag racing resumed and Ross overtook Hearne for second. Just after, Pecko and Baer battled with Hearne for third.

Ross climbed to the high side of the speedway and ran side by side with Sones for the race lead. It seemed that Sones had a better line out of the corners, but eventually Ross grabbed the lead on lap 22.

Mike Skarbowski cracked the top six to join the torrid battle between Hearne, Pecko and Baer.

With Sones tucked into the second spot he began to ride for what would have been his second best finish of the season. However, that changed with three laps remaining when he was forced to the infield with engine woes.

Ross held a sizable advantage over the closing laps and took his third feature win of the season. Somehow Skarbowski made his way up in the closing laps to finish in the runner up spot, followed by Hearne, Pecko and Baer.

Jason Hearne and Brian Sones took heat race victories.

Adam Cox started from the pole and was overtaken by Kyle Harvell before a lap was completed in the 30-lap Late Model feature. Justin Onderko climbed to second, followed by Cox, Craig Lutz and Mike Sweeney.

Cox dropped back to the fifth spot when Sweeney overtook him after the first lap. Shortly after, Mike Coll got by Cox to crack the top five.

With six laps on the board, Coll got by Sweeney and took the fourth spot and five laps later Onderko challenged Harvell for the top spot and took over the position.

Coll eventually climbed to third and began to challenge Harvell for the runner up spot. Harvell did a great job fending off several advances from coll. However, to much of his dismay, Harvell found himself in a turn three spin cycle on lap 26. Both he and Coll were forced to the back of the field for the restart.

Green flag racing resumed and following several quick caution periods, Onderko took the checkers for his fist career Late Model victory and first win at the speedway since 2004. Sweeney crossed the stripe in the second spot, followed by Harvell. Cox earned a career-best fourth place effort, followed by Lutz.

Heat race victories went to Mike Coll and Kyle Harvell.

Brandon Oltra led the largest field of Factory Stocks this season to the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap feature. He led the first circuit over Matt Schlenker, Kermit Jacoby, Eric Wink and Bob Wink.

The yellow flag waved when Jeff Searfoss slowed on the speedway. Mike Moyer, Jr. headed pit side with a fuel leak under the lap five caution.

Green flag racing resumed and Schlenker made the outside groove work to take the lead on lap six. At this point in the race, Paul Morgan, Jr. had worked into the top five.

Morgan pressured Oltra for the third position on the track and the two tangled in turn one, which brought out the lap seven yellow.

With Schlenker still in command, green flag racing resumed and it wasn’t long before the yellow was thrown when Morgan turned E. Wink while the two raced in turn four. Green flag racing resumed and was again followed by a yellow, this time for a tangle between B. Wink and Morgan on the front stretch.

Despite all of the action behind him, Schlenker held off Jacoby to score his first career feature event win. Scott Adams finished in the third spot, followed by Searfoss and Joey Barbush.

Matt Schlenker and Brandon Oltra scored heat race victories.

Ricky Ross, Jr., Kyle Harvell and Joe D’Angelo each won $50 when their finishing positions were pulled in victory lane as part of the Sundance vacations Contingency Program.

Sponsored by Barbush Racing, kids big wheel races were held at intermission. Plenty of young racers came out to take part in the festivities.
