JIMMY ZACHARIAS CLINCHES TWO TITLES, WINS MODIFIED FEATURE AT SHANGRI-LA II; FISHER TAKES ASA LATE MODEL CROWN BY TWO POINTS; LEE SHARPSTEEN WINS AGAIN

Jimmy Zacharias put the exclamation point on his amazing Shangri-La II Motor Speedway season last Saturday night as he won his fourth Modified featurev race of the season to clinch the championship in the premier division. Earlier in the evening he had won the Sportsman title merely by starting a race in which he crashed early.

The closest contest on the final point night of the season was for the ASA Late Model crown. Scott Nurmi and Trvais Fisher entered the evening tied, and remained dealocked after placing second in their respective heat races. Lee Sharpsteen, like J. Zacharias in the Sportsman class, basically needed only to start to clinch the Street Stock champonship. Not resting on his laurels, he won the hotly contested 20-lapper.

J. Zacharias found no easy path to the Modified victory, as Dean Rypkema led for 17 of the 35 laps, refusing to be intimidated by JImmy's relentless outside advances. Coming to the crossed flags, Zacharias finallty found the bite he needed on the top and cleared Rypkema for the lead. At that point he was already effectively the champion, but he didn't back off for a lap and won in impressive fashion.

J. Zacharias' challenger, Jim Storace, entered the program 14 points behind. He lost another two in heat action, but the title race was still wide open and Storace ran ahead of Zacharias in the opening laps. Then he tangled with J.R. Kent in turn two after the caution was displayed for a J.R. Swansbrough spin. It appeared to e minor incident and Kent restarted to finish third, but Storace went off on the hook and was done for the night.

Behind J. Zacharias, Rypkema, and Kent, T.J. Zacharias was a career-best fourth and rookie Scott Conover completed the top five.

In the ASA Late Models,Nurmi held the point race advantage in the early laps, but was eliminated from he race and from title cotention in a hard second turn crash with Chris Zacharias which saw flames briefly erupt from Nurmi's wrecked car. At that point it was realized that leader Jim Lamoreaux was very much in contention and could win the championship if Fisher did not take second. Fisher and Joseph Burns traded second on a pair of late-race restarts, but Fisher securedv the spot and the championship by two points over Lamoreaux. Burns was third and Craig Lutz fourth.

With J. Zacharias on the sidelines, Bryan Sherwood crusied to his second Sportsman win of the yesr over T.J. Zacharias, Tom Shiner, J.R. Kent, and Paul Johnson. Lee Sharpsteen topped Chris Daugherty, Cricket Clonch, Jeff Goodwin, and Glenn Lippolis in Street Stock action.

Shangri-La II Motorb Sdpeedway will retiurn to acton for its season finale, the second annual. Fall Brawl, on Satuday and Sunday, October 2-3, with a giant pit party following the races on Saturday and a100-lap Modified feature headlining the weekend on Sunday afternoon.
