St. Johns, Pa. - Barry Callavini of Hazleton, Pa., became the fourth driver to score a repeat Tour-Typ e $1500 to win Modified feature win this season at Sundance Vacations Speedway with a dominating victory in Sunday afternoon's 40-lap main event. Chip Wanamaker of Walnutport, Pa., made a last-lap pass to earn a $1,000 triumph in the second annual Brad Kline Memorial 25-lapper for Street Stocks, while Mike Kline of Lancaster, Pa., also made a late-race move to win the 20-lap Front Wheel Drive (FWD) four-cylinder feature.
Callavini lined up his yellow No. 4 car in third spot for the 40-lap Tour-Type Mod headliner, with Bobby Jones and Todd Baer directly ahead. At the drop of the green flag, pole starter Jones zipped into the lead, with Callavini ducking past Baer for second. The race's first caution flag for a Justin Gumley spin on lap four set up Callavini's winning maneuver.
On the restart, Callavini powered past Jones on the outside and took command. One lap later, first-time starter Buddy Miller walloped the turn one fence, bringing out the race's second caution. Jones ducked to the pits during the clean-up, moving fifth-starting Kyle Ebersole to second.
Six more cautions slowed the event, but on each restart Callavini powered away from the field. At the checkered flag he enjoyed a .82-second margin of victory over Brian DeFebo, who made his first Sundance start since the April 11 season opener.
"We made some changes after the heat race," Callavini explained afterward. "The car was a little tight at the center of the corners, so I had to make sure not to push it into the corners too hard."
Ebersole, who surrendered second to DeFebo on lap 25, finished third, with Nick Pecko and Dave Brigati fourth and fifth. Points leader Earl Paules Jr., whose car was light at the scales after an apparent heat race win, had to start the feature from 16th and last spot. He finished sixth and now leads defending track champ Ebersole by 85 points heading into this weekend's King of the Mountain double-points finale.
Jones and Pecko won the Tour-Type Mod heat races.
In a thrilling 25-lap Brad Kline Memorial, Wanamaker started from 10th spot and made his way through the field as Robert Fink (lap 1) and Mitch Hawk took turns leading the pack. Wanamaker moved to fifth by lap seven, and passed Scott Meckes for second place on a lap-15 restart.
The key to Wanamaker's win was the "competition yellow," which regrouped the field in double-file formation after lap 23 (in honor of Kline's former car number). Teammates Hawk and Wanamaker ran side-by-side over the final two laps before Wanamaker pulled ahead in turn two of the final tour. He led Hawk at the finish by a narrow .27 second. It was Wanamaker's second win this year.
"I miss Brad, and I drove my heart out last year to try to win this race," Wanamaker said. "This win is for Brad's family and for all the fans."
Hawk finished a second-best second and collected a majority of the $648 in lap money. Meckes placed third, with Rich DiMarco fourth and Steve Clark fifth. Points leader Joe Barbush Jr. returned from an early-race tangle to finish eighth. He holds a 46-point lead over Meckes heading into King of the Mountain weekend.
Meckes, Kevin Higgins and Hawk won Street Stock heats, with Clark winning the consolation race.
Mike Kline started fourth in the 20-lap FWD feature and tracked down early leader Eric Banashefski. With three laps remaining, Kline moved inside of Banashefski's car and took the lead, with fifth-starting Bill Verwys Jr. following him into second place. At the checkered flag, Kline led Verwys by .56 second and became the division's leading winner with five victories. Verwys finished second, with Dave Freundt, Banashefski and Jay Skupski completing the top five. Kline now has pulled to 10 points of championship leader Freundt with just the King of the Mountain race remaining.
Freundt and Kline split the FWD heat races.
Buddy Miller (Tour-Type Mod), Robert Haueisen (Street Stock) and Kline (FWD) won the $50 Sundance Vacations contingency awards.
The King of the Mountain weekend takes center stage this Saturday and Sunday, with extra-distance races for all divisions. Saturday's show is headlined by a 100-lap, $2,000-to-win Sport Modified feature, while Sunday's show will feature the $5,000-to-win Tour-Type Modified 150.
